Winter Fishing Virginia In ponds
Recently, I have been fishing in small ponds near my house. The ponds have murky water, and are only about 5 feet deep all around. No vegitation, but lots of structure and overhang. I havnt been lucky lately and havnt caught anything in 3 days. The temperature is around 45-55 now. Any advise on what i can use in late fall and early/late winter?

I find that in local ponds the bass are feeding on the same baits they were the rest of the year but they aren't feeding nearly as often. Their metabolism slows down a great deal. They will usually be in the same areas but will be staging in deeper areas or different areas (where the bottom contours change or merge) since most of the pond is around 5'. Look for any type of differences in the lay of the land around the pond. If their is a point that falls off into deeper water, etc. The overhang or maybe its a ledge, let a jig or jig-n-pig slowly fall off of the ledge and drop down into deeper water. Let it sit, twitch it a lil and let then slowly reel it in pause, reel, pause, twitch, etc and try again.
Cold water includes spinnerbaits: slow rolling along laydowns running the length from shore to deeper water (unless bank fishing) or just along the pond bottom. Small crankbaits 1/4 oz - 1/2oz that run from 3' to 5' deep will cover the water table for this depth pond. If you think they are closer to the bottom then throw a 3/8 oz or 1/2 oz small carolina rig with a worm, baby brush hawg, but try any plastic. Don't get hung up on one type, their is no right or wrong. If you have been fishing these ponds all season and using the same baits then by all means switch it up. They do get used to seeing the same baits over and over again. Could be a different color, different size, different speed but usually the colder the slower the retrieve. Murky water use a lil brighter color and things with noise usually to attract attention. You will have to experiment. Have fun.

Ponds are a good place to fish in Winter because they warm up so quickly. One warmer than usual day will turn them on. In a murky, shallow pond like you described, I'd probably throw a Rat L Trap most often. They work all Winter long.

Baby brush hogs, and 1/4oz jigs come to mind. Work them really slow along the bottom, no big hops or anything to erratic. Everything down there is cold and slow, makes you presentation look that way.

Hey Rails Are you close to Cascavelle? Sold some horses to a family from there back in the 70's and spent some time fishing La Ferme. You familiar?
