This huge hammer head shark was caught on 130 pound power pro! this is an 14 foot 1280 pound shark, if this doesn't give power pro any credit for strength nothing will. ZOOK; Maybe people will start believing or preaching on power prow and join the dark side. and loose less fish in break offs.

i use braided line, not power pro but simaler. i use spider wire stealth and tuf-line xp. braided realy shines when worming or any thing where sensitivity is needed

20 pound stingray for bait?!?!?!? That's insane. As a ANDE supporter, I will have to point out that we have over 1300 world records....

True.... But ANDE is voyaging into braid.... I don't have a strong preference in braid, but I generally use pp.

For bait he used a 20-pound live stingray on a 12/0 hook with 24 feet of 600-pound wire leader. A shoulder harness with a rod gimbal provided additional leverage
power pro wasn't much of a factor when 24 feet of steel leader was used ? ![]() ![]() |

how was it not a factor? There was still who knows how much Power Pro strung out on that fish...and it didn't fail.
"The shark towed Dennis' boat approximately 12 miles into the Gulf of Mexico before the crew could sink the first of two flying gaffs into it." Power Pro wasn't a factor?? |

if it was a salt water fish the record is held on ande mono line-they don't advertise holding more weight records than ANYONE for nothing.. my largest shark -538 pound black tip- came on a frozen 4 pound drum.. zilla it does not say what type of braid..i have never seen a spool of power pro big enough to fill a 8/0 penn reel. about 1000 yards of 130pound braid..-takes 1500 yards of 80 pound mono to fill it up. the wire leader is NOT cable but single strand ss wire..a shark -even a small one- will go thru seven strand cable like it was mac and cheese. any true shark fisherman will use regular metal hooks not ss.. zooker

Hey Zook I actually saw the article in an out door magazine and it said power pro was used. When I looked it up on the net it didn't say power pro. but the mag had a better write up in it.

T'weren't the line...t'were the leader!
![]() Not casting aspersions on Power Preau or those who like it, but in situations such as these THE crucial component, among other important ones, IS the leader. From '52 through '55, as an Field Grade Army Officer's Family in the Canal Zone (Paradise Lost...damn you, Jimmy Carter!) we were treated to deep-sea angling every five to six weeks, at taxpayer's expense... ![]() In those days it was braided Dacron (?) and heavy wire leaders. With such, we caught Marlin, Tuna, Shark, and various other critters (ever seen a Roosterfish?). I learned then that is was all in the leader, assuming all else was in order. Just sayin', with due respect to P.Preau... If I may... I was a kid; 8.5 yrs old when we got there via ship and touching 12 when we left (they had to drag me aboard USNS GIBBONS). As the ship left the pier, an Army band was playing, my little GF (A Military Police major's daughter...perhaps leaving WAS a good thing ![]() There was nothing like arriving at the famous Balboa Yacht Club (RIP) in predawn darkness, hearing the rumble of the J-Boat's twin engines as we backed out of the slip, and heading out into the Bay of Panama, hence into the Pacific. Wow! More than once we met, chatted, and shared a drink (soda pop for me) and/or a meal of fresh fish with Papa (Hemingway), Robert Ruark, and a few other outdoorsmen of note. Ahhhh...Panama. Thou wert Paradise enow! (Sorry, Omar.) "Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone?" Sniff... F.Rod Old Zonian, and damned proud of it. |

Dang, Flyrod, I can't comprehend what you said.At first, I thought you were at Fort Clayton, Panama.I said not, airborne = Ft.Clayton, must be Fort Davis ? I was stationed at Ft. Clayton, but was selected to be an instructor at Fort Sherman, jungle training operations and I also was on the Zoo crew which collected animals for the zoo. Then I seen the dates you were there.I wasn't even born yet, Probably didn't have all of the U.S. installations yet ?

We were at Fort Gulick (Atlantic side) for a few weeks and then got lucky and got palatial quarters at Fort Kobbe (Pacific). You'd probably know Kobbe as Howard AFB but it was ALL Army during my years, with only one of the hangars devoted to some AF stuff. Kobbe was the home of the old 33rd Infantry Regiment (Motto:"Smiling We Come"..spooky!) which had a great regimental band, (somehow way over TOE strength and could THEY play!) and the 504th Field Artillery. Kobbe was on the other side of Teddy's Big Ditch from Clayton, Corazel, Amador, Albrook, 15th Naval District, Balboa, etc, etc. Actually there were MORE installations then. Far too many to name them all. Some of the posts dated back to the 20's. Many of the old posts and airfields were inactive and we used to roam a lot. I remember walking out on the runway of an old Naval Air Station and imagining the activity during WW2. There was an abandoned(?) Privateer just sitting there under the rainy skies, OMG! http://www.military.cz/usa/air/war/o...ngle%20011.jpg This was the Navy's single tail version of the B-24...That talllllll "sail"...gorgeous! Still had the guns! (and lot's of 'em) Although Panama was never attacked to any degree, they WERE ready. The Navy was still flying the old Martin Mariners on patrol when we were there. Dad and I got a free "demo" ride a time or two. http://www.liberatorcrew.com/15_Gunn...artinBPM-5.jpg The AF was flying B-17s and B-29s outta Albrook, unarmed, but with airdroppable lifeboats slung underneath for rescue. Also had the Grumman SA-16 Albatross for actual pickup rescues. http://www.electric-image.co.uk/ukai...tross-001a.jpg The old Coast Artillery emplacements were fascinating! Huge naval guns, pointing out to sea, rusting away. BTW, did you know that Coastal Artillery was a seperate branch of the Army until after WW2? Google 'em! We found several wrecked aircraft, some almost undamaged. I recall P-47 T'bolts AKA "Jugs", http://www.edwards.af.mil/gallery/im.../p47-1_300.jpg and a P-40. http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/p40.jpg We found some Naval aircraft, and a bomber or two as well. Also, the last of the PT boats were still there when I was. My piano teacher, a tasty(I could just tell,) young morsel, was married to a Navy Lt.JG who took me on several PT rides when I had done well at recitals. WOW!!!! and more WOW!!!! Life in Panama was so wonderful that Hawaii, by comparison, was considered a "hardship" tour...not kidding. Burn in Hell, Carter and Clinton! Thanks for the memories, Dad. I miss you. FR Kobbe Kid |

flyguy, one of my 4 sisters and me were both born in panama, my dad was a lifer in the army, spent 3 years in guam and was in panama with mom for awhile..he ended his career in the late 50s as a colonel..died 6 years later at age 46 in 1964..I think he entered the army in 1939, went to officers training school and had something to do with medical camps in guam.
