Try pushing the front end of the cover down toward the rod- I don't have one, but thats how mine work.

Skeeter-push down on the center disk on either side of the bar in the middle of the side plate, grab the bar with your thumb and finger and turn it to the left, which unlocks the side plate. Then pull the side plate off. Reverse the process to put the plate back on. I've got a bunch of these reels and really like them.

i figured it out guys, thanks! that reel casts so smoothly, i took it into the yard with an 1/8 ounce plastic worm rig and started casting. i backlashed about 5 times till i finally adjusted the spool tension a little more and then turned the itb braking to about 3 or 4. i can cast with it now, very well.

Gee, that sounds so simple and easy. Don't forget to cross your eyes, place your left foot behind your right ear, and contemplate your navel while removing the side-plate. Otherwise, you'll never get it back on.

Surgeon General's Warning: The disassembly and attempted reassembly of hi-tech Japanese-designed reels may cause cancer, hemorrhoids, uncontrollable rage, divorce, impotence, terminal dandruff, and the squirts. In some cases, domestic violence, substance abuse, and obscene phone calls to tackle manufacturer's "Customer Service" lines have resulted.

Further, the CIA and Naval Intelligence have discovered irrefutable evidence that the Japanese developed these reels as a means of getting even for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. (The Germans sent Jagermeister over here in retaliation for D-Day.) Sore losers...both 'em!
