Check your line!

Had an experience yesterday that brought checking your line home. I was throwing a DT-10 and got it hung up. Retrieved it and made another cast. As I started the cast the line snapped and the lure went sailing. Fortuately, DT-10s float and I saw where it landed so I was able to get it back, but as I looked at it there was about 6" of line still tied to the lure. Checked the line and sure enough, there was a lot of abrasion on it. Cut off the damaged line and continued fishing, but my point is if you don't periodically check the line you may lose your favorite bait, or worse.

We had the same happen over the weekend, after I got home and started checking line while I was tying on dif. lures, on some of the line 6 feet from the lure were frays from all the rocks and timbers...I usually just check a few feet away from where I tied onto, but am glad I inspected the line 6-10 feet back.

It's funny how we know to do this, and we don't. Normally I am anal about checking the line but every once in a while, I slack off, and then it bites me in the fanny. Such neglect cost me the catch of my first silver salmon.

Bob, I was using P-Line Floroclear, but any line you pull across rocks and stumps will fray. Even braid.

Great point JB, you've got to remember to occassionally check way up the line.... Any part of your line that's hitting structure should be inspected.

Reb it will happen again and again and it will confound you.. I have the same thing happen many times.. At first I assumed a nick in the line from structure.. Then after the second time I thought bad line and replaced the line. Each time it was about a foot from lure to six inches.. Third time with new line taught me that the ceramic guide tip was cracked/chipped. I had to look real hard to see it.. A q-tip found the crack...

Good point Reb, lucky for you it was a floating crankbait, i have lost a few spinnterbaits and buzzbaits like that, and when they are 5 - 8 bucks a piece there not easy on the wallet to replace, even though i probably have 2 or 3 more just like them in the tackle bag...

Read it, know to do it. Still can't say how many times Ive watched a good spinner bait go flying through the air. WOW!!! Look at that cast, must be goin a mile!!! Hey, what the hell is this limp line floating? The rest of this me to myself conversation is edited due to site restrictions on language. Check your lines folks.
