Default Spoons!

Anybody see the article Heavy Metal on the Bassmaster website? It really got me thinking about how effective and reliable these easily overlooked, age-old lures can really be. It doesn't take too much tackle, lures are fairly inexpensive, yet these baits catch fish!

I need to know really what action and power rods would be used using this technique. I was thinking something along the lines of a 6'-6'6'' Medium/Heavy or Heavy for those larger, one to two ounce baits. Spinning or casting? I was thinking spinning would be easier due to the fact that you are rarely "casting" the lures, but rather "dropping" them into the schools of those cold, winter bass.

Any opinions will be highly helpful!

The best advice I can give you is stop thinking. It is a very expensive and difficult technique to catch fish with and if your in a multi-species lake, bass are rarely caught before another species of fish is. The GPS/fishfinder is the most expensive part of the equasion in my opinion. P N J

wel i differ with the other 2 guys. as far as reels. it doesn't really matter to me which you use. but i think you will need a heavy rod. and line as well. the reason is you are mostly "dropping" the spoon in the school and using a jig style action. if i use a heavey spoon, i drop it. and if i use a light spoon, i cast it. but i also will add a pig or trailer of some kind on the spoon. so try it both ways. you'll be suprised at what will happen. my father taught me to use the spoon ages ago. and i still use it today. good luck.

Thanks Bama!

Do you reccommend a longer "heavy" rod, or a stouter one?

I remember fishing for trout with spoons when I was a kid. Also with Mepps in-lines. I always got upset when I caught a bass with them. That was back in the 60's. Now that I've seen the light and have become addicted to bass fishing I guess I should give them a try again.

I'm going down below truman in march. I realized i don't have any spoons. Wally World had 6 Daredevils in a kit for 5 & some change. Ever Since BPS decided to come to town. Ol Wally Worlds Lure selection seems like it got allot cheapor lately. So White bass fishing will get allot more afordable with them prices. Oh yeah i want to see that article. Somtimes with all these new fishing ways we forget the old ways. But spoons have caught more fish than any type of swim bait made in the history of fishing. Like i said somtimes old way's are better

i use a 7 ft. med to hvy rod. that way if i want to cast it or drop it i am covered. and you are welcome. that brought back some old time memories of fishing with pop. so thank you for reminding me. i went ant bought some pork rind today, lol. my rods are an ugly stick and a lighting rod. let me know how you do man. and they are right, if you drop it , you might catch a stripe in deep water. and if memory serves the stripes we caught were BIG. i am talking 25lbs or better. especially at the dam on smith lake in cullman. and stripe bass is great grilled with butter and garlic mixed with lemon pepper, lol. you can cut fish steaks outa them, lol.

No stripers up here, pike or yellow perch, walleye at the worst, and still that is not too bad!

I've been researching and I was thinking something around 6'7''-7'2'' (If I can find this, it would be great!). Probably around MH action, spinning. Will a MH spinning rod be more limber than a MH casting outfit?

i think they are about the same. to me it is all about the hook set. i like the cheap ones, lol. lighting rod and ugly can be bought at wal-mart. 6'7" is good and anything over 7 is probably too long. see to me it would take a long time to set the hook. especialy if you are fishing real deep water. you need to come south and catch some of the stripers then, a 25 pounder is awesum man. haven't caught one in ages but now i am wanting to try this year. thanks to you, hahaha. by the way guys... the wife says i am gonna get cut off this site, haha, says it is getting to cost too much at wal-mart. oh well, hahahahaha! goning anyway.

Well, why are you here when you could be wasitng money out at Wally-World?

I think I might try a Falcon this time (Sorry St.Croix...). I have a Falcon Low Rider that's 6'7'' , Medium, and I LOVE IT! It's the perfect "blade" rod. If I can find a rod like this with a MH action, I think I would be chillin' nicely.

I'll let 'ya know how it all pans out. I probably won't be getting it until I come back from Alaska (Late June). I need to let Mom cool down. She didn't really like the $450.00 rod I just bought. Wonder why...

If your Mom is spending that kind of money on your tackle, does she need another son? I'm in my 50s but I can still say Momma!

hey look wal-mart ain't got no 450 dollar rod. and i ain't spending that much for a rod anyway. even if i had the money, hahha. if i had that kind of money i would be a pro and the sponsers would GIVE me the rod. just to try it out, lmao. good for you for working for your tackle. but if you saved that money you could use it for something to better yourself, meaning an education. or house or retirement. now i ain't saying not to buy tackle. but good ol wally world has alot of stuf and then there's k-mart too. along with the on line stores and bps is about 2 hours away. but i have never spent 450 dollars (hard to inmagine that much for a rod) on a rod. if i bought that thing i would be afraid to use it. it might get broken or fall of the boat or something. hahaha. good luck with it and hope you catch everything in the water.

I figure I have the rest of my life to dick around with bills and payments. Why worry about that stuff now, the best years of my life, when they could be spent having fun? I'll pay for college when I get a job and am out of school. I have a 4.0 GPA right now, that could mean scholarships.

I'd rather spend that $450.00 on a rod and reel and feel good I bought it, feel how nice and light it is, than spend $30 on a Wal-Mart rod that weighs fourteen ounces and have it break on a hook-set three weeks later.

I work for it, I buy what I want. When I work hard, I work hard, when I play hard I play hard...

lunker i a proud that you work for your toys. i work too. i didn't mean to get you upset. it is just that i can't pay that much for a rod. heck there's a 200 dollar reel i want at wally world, but i can't afford it. go and buy the things you want now while you're young anf don't any bills.. for real. i mean it.then when you go pro, hopefully you'll rember us here that can't have those things and help us out. just kidding. back in my younger days, there weren't any really good rods out there. the best reel was the magI from abu. and i got it..still have it today. it is my ol faithful. and i bought a lighting rod to go with it. stil have it too. back then it costs me a total of 160 bucks. and 1980 that was alt of money. considering that i only made about 3.75 and hour, lol. so go ahead and get the things you can afford now. hope they last as long as mine have. good luck and happy fishing.

Easy there, young fella! Just playing with what you said about your Mom. If you bought it with your own money I don't reckon there's any reason for her to be upset (other maybe wanting you to spend it somewhere else, or save it).

I disagree with you lunk. Yes Ugly sticks are heavy in comparison. But that 30.00 rod will hold it's own against any thing you can buy for the money. Many guy's own quality reels. I ain't mad at you about that at all. But that 30.00 ugly stick will do anything that 450.00 dollar rod will do. I believe it to be a very tuff rod. You see Rod selection should'nt be about how much money you spend. More you spend does'nt always equal tuff. I build rods & rebuild old rods as well. Shakespere does have a cheap reputation on many products. But they also have a very good one as well for quality products. Ugly sticks & cajun Mono are good products that have proven them selves. I use both. I pull fish out of the Missouri River in stuff that would send that 450.00 dollar rod home cry'n to it's Moma. I fish heavy current that people who are lake fish'n don't deal with. I have gone threw allot of Rod's. Allstars & Loomis Rods are all dead. But i staked my reputation 15 yrs ago fishing Redman tourmanents on buying a 25.00 ugly stick. I still own that Rod today. Infact all i own are Berkly & Ugley sticks rods. They've proven themselves in tournaments & River fishing. You see it's not about how much money you spend. Sometimes there are products that are cheaper that will do just as good or better Without braking the bank. If you don't want EVA Grips. Then buy the ugly stick tiger Rod has cork handles. You'll send about 60.00 for it but it is the same ugly blank. With a better handle & Eye's. But that's a far cheaper than what you spent. Do you know production cost is'nt much more. Example- A 20.00 rod proably cost about 3.55 to make. A 200.00 dollar rod proably cost 10.00 to make. You know the diference is between these 2 rods are. About 6.45 cents difference in cost. With the 200.00 Rod you have about 1000 percent mark up from what it cost to make. Sad to think lunk if you knew what it cost the companies to make these reels & Rods. You would cry!!!! That's why not always spending the most money get's you a better product. But instead more Mark up for the company. I'll put my old 65.00 lews speed spool aginst any 200.00 reel made today. Give both 20 years. lets see which one last longer & which one will fetch more money on ebay.

I know Ugly Stik's are good rods, owned 'em for years, but I like my St.Croix's. I don't really give-a-damn if that rod only takes $20.00 to make. That rod is hand-made, right here in the U.S. of A., all with top-of-quality parts. All Avid's (And Up) come with lifetime warranty's, and all other's have at least a five year. What's so bad about that?

I've gott one of the old loomis rods witha liftime guarantee. I don't know if they offer it anymore. But you have spend money sending it back with the warranty paper work. Wait weeks even months in some cases to get your rod back repaired or replaced. Then there were all these little loop holes in fine print that they did'nt cover. After awhile it was just a dam hassle. I did this 3 times. So it sit's there in a pile of other rods. One day i will strip & rebuild it. I loose money shipping it back every time it needs fixed. When i can do it myself.
