Default Bad day at the office

As mentioned in a valentines day thread.I lost the end of my left index finger at work yesterday.I was told to go setup another job for a new person just hired 2 days prior.I wasn't aware he had thought he could set it up on his own , since he has watched me set it up for him the previous times.Needless to say I lost the end of my finger quicker than a blink of an eye, because he had it all messed up and didn't tell me he had changed anything from the previous setup. It was a bad deal, but I guess it could have been worse.4500 lbs of force will shear your finger off instantly. It is odd, that it didn't even hurt when it happened.Today it hurts like hell. The vicodin takes the edge off, but its going to take time to heal since there is nothing there to fold over to close up the wound.P N J

I will have to see how it goes, once it is healed.
I am old school, always wrapped the finger around to touch the line in front of the reel. That is going to bug the hell out of me.It should save on the braided line cuts, since I ain't going to be able to reach the line anymore. tying knots was a chore when its cold out, gonna be a real b!tch when you only got half a finger to use. Yep, it sucks, but I can't change it. P N J

Seriously Ivan, you might ought to contact Tony Iommi's people to find out exactly what he is using these days. I'm sure you know the same thing happened to him.

Man sorry to here that. As a meat cutter I've seen a couple other guys lose their fingers. They say after it heals, it just takes awhile to get used to it and adjust. I was lucky though, still got all 10. But then you could drop a granade and I wouldn't look away from the saw till my hands were clear no matter what.
I hope it heals quick for ya.

On the other thread, I wasn't entirely sure you were serious. But man am I sorry to hear that. I play guitar, also, and I can't imagine the feeling of disappointment of maybe not being able to do that anymore. Many prayers for a quick healing and figuring out a way to keep the music alive.

I like brushhog's idea, too. But I think I would just hit his finger with a hammer every day until yours heals. Ya know, just to give him a small taste...

That really sucks and I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure you are, but take the good out of it and realize it could've been your whole hand. Good luck, and you should get used to it buddy.

sorry to hear about your finger. again i say. i too have had the tip of my bird finger on my right hand mashed off. it took the very tip and nail out. luckly there was enough to fold over. looks ok from a distance. you can't tell till you get real close to see it. took 15 stictches. the nail grew back. but i tell ya, when it is cold, the finger knows first. and sometimes i hit the tip and .....man does it hurt.i was using a hydraulic shear that cuts plates up to 2" stainless steel. take care of it. don't let it get infected at all. and do wear a sling. keep it above your heart. that helps alot in the healing process. less pain. i have seen alot of guys who lost fingers who play guitar. after a while you will get used to it. but you will always have a feeling that it is still there sometimes and try to use it. that is natural. don't get mad at yourself when it happens. and don't take it out on the other guy, he feels bad i am sure. and would trade places if he could.when it happened to me the other guy mashed the peddle and i got caught. he wouldn't operate that machine for 2 months cause he felt so bad. take care of it and good luck.

Good thing you didn't lose your middle finger. I have heard that is essential for driving in the state of new york. Some sort of signal apparently.

I am really sorry to hear about the incident. Hope it doesn't effect your fishing and guitar playing. All things considered, at least you only lost the tip of your finger.

As a side note, when the smoke clears, you might want to consult with a New York lawyer about a possible workers' compensation claim.

God bless, hopefully you'll adapt quickly to the loss. Just out of curiosity- did this guy get in trouble or fired for setting up the machine wrong?

i agree with wishing. you need to check on the company insurance. i didn't and lost a little bit of money cause of it. most company insurances pay so much for each knuckle, digit you lose due to work. be sure to check it out. it may not be much, but hey it could help at the tackle store. take care.
