Unhappy Goodbye, buddy...

Guys, I just lost my best buddy not an hour ago. He died in my arms, and I heard his last breath escape his little beak. He was playing with a toy on his cage, and it looks like somehow he got his head under a bar, panicked, and broke his neck.

His name was Gandalf, and he had been my buddy for almost 13 years. We had a great Sunday, listening to music, with him dancing clownishly to the beat.

I plan on burying him tomorrow in the back yard. He used to love to look out the back window ("do you see the biirds?" he used to say). I will be including his favorite toy.

I never thought this day would come. He was supposed to outlive me, and I am amazed at how broken up I am about it. This one is not going to pass very quickly.

So long, Gandalf. I'm gonna miss you, buttmunch (his favoirte word).

R.I.P. Gandalf 1997-2010

Sorry for your loss......I've been around several Greys, and I know how cool a bird they are....I also know what its like to loose those little family members.....I lost my bestest little buddy, a year or so ago and it was rougher on me then I ever expected, so I feel yer pain Bryce.

Both of our dogs are buried in the backyard behind my shop, wrapped in their favorite blankets and with their favorite chewtoys....I sit back there once in awhile and visit with them.

Really sorry for your loss Bryce. Pets can really become an important part of your life, especially for those of us that live alone with a pet.

You have my condolences.

I remember my wife wanting a dog and me resisting.. they i let her get a cocker spaniel under protest.... then when we had to put her down, i cried more than she did... its amazing how animals can be such huge parts of your life.

I'm very sorry to read about your loss Bryce. African Grays are amazing birds, and have so many human characteristics. Very intellegent animals. And once they bond to you, it's forever.

I'm very sorry for your loss Nofear. I've lost several dear pets or rather little family members over the years and I know well how much you must be hurting.

I am totally crushed right now, as I discovered I killed him. When I went to bed last night, I discovered I had left a non-stick frying pan warming on the oven from dinner. Even though it didn't burn (no smoke, no nothing...it was only on warm), the non-stick coating released fumes (humans can't smell), which are toxic to parrots.

He basically suffocated, and the squawk I heard was when he fell off his perch.

Man...there will never be another like my Gandalf. I feel like a piece of dog$hit right now.

Hey Nofear, you can't beat yourself up... You gave him 13 great years, not all animals/pets are so lucky. Remember all the great things you did for and with your friend. Again, so sorry....

I dunno Nofear, I had learned that the nonstick coatings only release nasty gases at very high temperatures... if it was merely on warm, the coating should not have released gases.
But sadly, nothing you think or I think will bring him back.
Again, sorry for your loss.

Although not the same thing, I just pulled two of Abbeys floating dead goldfish out of the aquarium (one she's had for a very long time - I think the recently added wmart newbies brought disease with them) and I'm dreading when she comes home as I know how upset she will be. She's at a very emotional age.

ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh bryce................man i m SO SORRY to hear this. i too know how it feels to think that you're the one responsible for the death. we had a female collie before the king gallahad we have no (who is 13 and on his way to the LORD soon). my wife and her mother took her (prissy lady) to the vet for her annual checkup. we also have 3 horses now ok? so they are standing there with the dog between them and looking at the vet and ask if it is safe to give her the hearworm med we use on the horses. he said 'sure, jsut give her a pea sized amount and she will be fine". well I gave it to her. took 24 hours of her dehydrating herself of ALL her bodily fluids and going into a coma then she passed. this is why we are SO devoted to gallie now. and we will cry our eyes out for who knows how long when we lose him. so trust me when i tell you we know how oyu feel buddy. but you have to look at it another way. he may have saved your life. there soulc have been a fire that took you as well.

we will pray for oyu bryce. again, so sorry my friend.

NFE, I am really sorry to hear about your bird. I only have dogs but I sure understand how animals take control of our hearts. Don't beat yourself up just remember all the good times you have had together.

So sorry about Gandalf, Bryce. He was a beautiful bird, and it seems he loved the camera. I know how hard it is to lose a pet, they are family.
