Default Toothpicks And Bullet Weights

I know you can push a toothpick into the head of a bullet weight, break it off, and it keeps the weight from sliding up and down your line.
What I don't remember, is WHY you do it. What advantages do you gain.
Also, the lakes we fish in are full of stumps and logs. Woud the pegged
weight help to keep you from getting hung up?
Thanks
Dannie
