Default Terminal tackle for cranks

I read that when tying crankbaits you tie directly to the line esp. with Rapala. In flipping thru the Fall edition of Bassin there's a picture of a Storm subwart on page 23 that's attached to the line with a small stainless steel clip.

Are there certain cranks that I can use a clip on the terminal end or what's the deal? Your comments and opinions are appreciated.
