I had meant to post this last week, but never got around to getting the pics off my phone. I guess it should go here since there is not a "I got skunked" forum.
I had a club tourney last week at a lake that has been downright miserable this year. Based on the city lake reports, this lake is only giving up fish at a rate of 1 bass per 6 fishermen. While I did not have high hopes, I did feel as though I only needed 1 fish to win. The water is very high right now and there is not a bad looking spot on the lake. I went with a plan to fish the stickups near the launch. My thought was that the past tourney releases would be right there. It was frustrating because I was marking fish and watched busters for an hour, but could not get hit. I made my way down the shore line and found a big hump next to a feeder creek. The hump was 5' down, but the depth dropped to 18' on three sides of it. I camped on this spot for an hour. I did get my first bite of the day on the drop shot. I felt the first nibble, lowered teh rod tip and that was it. I cast back to the same spot and got thumped hard. I set the hook on nothing and bought back half of my dropshot worm. The sun finally broke through around 11, so I switched over to the flipping stick and began to hit the trees. After an hour I got my only good strike of the day. I was tossing a 5" reaction innovations tube under the trees and watched my line run. I set the hook hard and felt the weight, a head shake, and then nothing. That was it for the day. Three total bites and no fish. Final count for the club, 20 fishermen, 3 bass caught. The winning bag was 2 fish for 6.5 lbs. 2nd Place had 1 fish for 1.5 lbs. 12 of the remaining 18 say that they never even got hit! I have another tourney on that lake on 11 June. It is the San Diego Top-6 tourney where every club sends the top 6 guys. None of us are looking forward to it. I will say this. The place looks like a great spot to catch fish.
