Mightee Worms plus one on a frog

As I mentioned back in this thread, one thing I wanted to try out this year was the 10.5" YUM F2 Mightee Worm on a YUM Pumpkin E2D Jig. I'm down in Iowa for the weekend (celebrating my parents' 50th anniversary!

), so we did a little fishing tonight in the couple hours of daylight we had left after I arrived. We were fishing at the gravel pits where I caught my PB in 2010, a 6lb 9oz LM, so I know there are BIG bass to be had there. The first thing I rigged up was a Watermelon Red 10.5" Mightee Worm thinking maybe I could tie into a nice one. I had a hit on the second cast, and of course I set the hook way too soon, not being used to fishing such a large worm. It was a miss, but I was excited to have gotten a hit right away. A dozen or so casts later I felt another pop on the other end of my line. This time I waited patiently and took the little bit of existing slack out of my line, then laid into a hookset. A few seconds later I was hauling a THIRTEEN inch bass ashore. Seriously? A 13" bass on a 10.5" worm?!? Wow, a little guy with big ambitions. I guess you have to admire that.

I have high hopes for catching some big bass on this worm this year. Has anyone else out there tried it yet?

I fished the worm a longer with no more hits, so I switched over to a black widow poppin' frog (the same one that landed the 6.9 there in 2010). I had one that took a swipe at it after a few casts, but didn't take it. I finally walked all the way into the corner of one pit and cast as far as I could into the wind and parallel to one shoreline lined with trees, although none of them really overhang the water. I bet my frog was less than 3 feet from that shoreline. I started popping, pausing, twitching, pausing, etc. and about halfway back the frog got crushed. I waited a moment, reeled down to it and hammered home the hooks. It was a skinny 16.25" and 2lb 10oz, but man what a fighter, and several jumps too. It was a blast to catch that one...nothing like a good topwater blast and the fight that follows.
