Just wondering what is everybodies thoughts on transducer placement?

i.e. transom mount Vs. trolling motor mount. I am debating moving my transducer from the transom to the trolling motor.

I wouldn't move the transducer. If you move the transducer to the TM it won't be useful if the TM is up-it will be pointing straight ahead rather than down, and unless you move the unit to the bow it won't do you much good if it is mounted on the console.

I got a second unit to mount on the TM.

When you say transom, do you mean "thru the hull" or on the outside of the boat on the back? I have heard it used both ways.

It shouldn't matter where you place the transducer as far as finding structure goes, it more depends on how/when you use your depth finder. If you are only looking for structure and fish while driving with the motor then obviously it should be on back of the hull, since your trolling motor isn't down. If you only look for structure with the trolling motor, then trolling motor or back doesn't matter. If your only using one unit, I would put it on the back of the transom, IMO.

On the outside. Mounting a transducer to shoot through the hull causes a lot of garbage and isn't very accurate.

On the subject, does anyone know if you can mount the lowrance transducer inside the aluminium motor mount on a poontoon?

Because they don't have to pay out of pocket for the electronics that are good enough to shoot through the hull and not have all that garbage. I am working with an old humminbird from the mid 90's, not a brand new Lowrance that costs 900 bucks.

So, the transom mount vs. thru the hull debate greatly depends on the model of unit and the year that it was produced. That makes sense. Now I understand where your coming from. Sad part of it is, a $900 unit is not the most expensive unit out there. |

I would mount it to the transom. As already stated by Jolly, if it's on the trolling moter it's got to be in the water for any readings. That's why most bass boats have 2. One at the console, for driving, checking structure. The other up front on the trolling moter to use as you're trolling.

I never had a problem with my old Humminbird shooting through the hull not giving accurate readings-it worked fine. The only drawback to a through-the-hull mount IMO is you don't get a water temperature reading which, especially this time of year, is pretty important.
