I am awed. But even more so that that, I am astounded by the presence of someone more obsessive and anal retentive than me to be able to do something like that. AMAZING!!!

Very cool, but how could you fish with something that pretty? I'm hard on my rods.

That is mind blowing. Just might make you catch more fish. When you stop at stare at the work you slow down and get the hits on the fall. Wow its one thing to have the skill to lay it down but the vision to too.

Rod Building
If you happen to be in the neighborhood of Showplace Center, Feb 20 and 21 High Point NC is the International Rod Building Show check it out. Folks from all over the place converge and its simply incredible. Demo's and classes anything and everything related to rod building.
This is the time to buy all your rod building supplies. There are 4 of us from this area that travel togeather (really saves some money to spend when we get there) and have a great time. http://home.earthlink.net/~icrbe/ Check out rodbuilders.org for pics of handles, weaves, wraps, feather inlay. It just amazes me how much talent there is involving this aspect of fishing.

Those wraps are amazing. At the fishing shows around Michigan I always like looking at the Grandt rods: http://grandtrods.com/grandtrods_options.htm They do a lot of crazy work like this.

I would really like to get into rod building as a hobby. I bet its as therapeutic as using them. How do you get started? Are the classes offered by Mud Hole a good starting point?

You've just started. The foremost site regarding every aspect of rod building is at http://www.rodbuilding.org No question goes unanswered. Then there are some books written by various builders that really help. When I go out to my workshop I'll get the names of some of what I have and the authors. Check out Dale Clemens Custom Rod Thread Art and Fiberglass Rod Building Read the "Library" section in Rodbuilders.org as it has valuable guideline for many aspects of the art. It is truly an art. Check out the photo gallery. The elaborate wraps and weaves are almost beyond comprehension (keep in mind there is a correct tool for every job) Keep in mind that there is beauty in simplicity. There is a magazine that is published every 2 months Rod Builders and it is superb the quality and photograhs and articles are unmatched. The publisher Tom Kirkman is a name you will become very familiar with. He does the mag as well as the site and is master. The first rod you build will be the standard for you to compare all the following builds and is very important no to under rate or change it. Each rod after that is measurable and you will see how you overcome certain challenges that accompany the art. Go for it and just continue to ask. I really suggest focus on making a wrapping fixture. I have about $25 in this one just using an old futon frame and wood under my bench. It has the thread holder that is tensioned with odd/ends springs behind the spools works great. Rod building can get outlandishly expensive (Renzetti) But get your work station so that you are comfortable. The rods pictures are before during and after, I think the second rod I built. Its easy to want and tell you all about it but believe me there are folks who have forgoten more about rod building than I'll ever know. How much do you need to know? Not much. PATIENTS. You will be challenged at ever step of the process, You find subtle obstacles that you will continuously overcome. Before you spend on anything read everything on the subject you can scrounge up. theres no limit. As far as relaxing........When you wrap its a little hypnotic terribly peaceful ......then all hell breaks loose Like when in the morning when you return to the rod you left in the motorized drying jig that it had fallen out during the night and trashed out the wet apoxy on your beautiful wrap that took hour after hour after hour. A simple piece of tape to assure it remained secure during rotation would have prevented the wreck. That's how you learn. I had read afterwards that the same thing happened to another builder and to add insult to injury I learned it wasnt necessary to rotate a drying rod morn than 2 hours using a much better way of appling the apoxy that actually solved a different challenge (air bubbles in the apoxy) so you can see its an endless learning process. Too much info. I wonder if a rodbuilding section of this site might be possible. Sound like there could be a lot of interest. If you cant find what your looking for just PM me and I can probably point you in the right direction at least where good info can be found. One more thing, if you see the decal like below on a boat tor truck at the ramp they are probably rod builders. So ask. And if you clik on the pics I discovered they get BIG and all the mistakes show up
