$100 Bait casting combo (for someone who'd never used a bait caster?)
Another $100 thread (I'll get famous for these, seeing as I know very little about fishing gear)>
I've got an "anniversary gift" coming from work, so I'm getting a new fishin' pole. Recommend a baitcasting combo for around $100, for someone who's never used a baitcaster before. - Needs to be retail item - no craigslist or second-hand, unfortunately. - Can be pieced together, but prefer to get both rod and reel from same store. - Doesn't need to include line or accessories. - Primarily for shore fishing, so plenty of heavy cover. On your mark, get set... GO! |

GP, when learning baitcasting I always recommend getting the best reel you can afford. It really makes it much easier to learn. I've seen people give up on them because they got a cheap reel.
If your budget is only $100, I'd spen $75-80 on the reel and spend the rest on an ok GRAPHITE rod. I'd recommend a Daiwa Exceler or an Abu Garcia Pro Max reel. For the rod, Bass Pro has a Graphite Series rods for around $25-30 (I think). Too bad you can't get this reel from eBay or something. You can find Abu Garcia Revo S reels or Shimano Citicas for great prices. BB

I would look at the Daiwa Exceler combos. The Exceler is a solid reel and the rod is decent. I'm pretty sure they can be had for right around $100.
Actually this is a great price on this combo! http://www.cabelas.com/p-0066762124204a.shtml |

Guys, is the aqua superstore still offering the veritas for that absurd price? You could match that up with a Abu silvermax and have a nice, matched combo somewhere around $100.

I'd recommend looking at the Daiwa Procaster Navy, it's a 60$ reel onsale right now for 40 bucks. It's got external casting breaks, so they're easier to cast, and adjust. After that, chuck the Shimano Clarus. 70$ rod. That' put the price tag at 109, and add a 10% off tackle warehouse coupon, and it bring it down to 98 bucks!
130$ combo, for under 100! rod http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage-SHCLCR.html reel http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage-DP100HN.html 10% off http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/malone/

Thanks for the suggestions gents.
Regarding the Exceler vs. the BPS Tourney Special - Anyone have any comments about one vs. the other? (Also, I noticed both are right-hand retrieve... does this mean the reel handle is on the right side? If so, bummer!) |

I've got a Exceler, it is a good reel for the money. It has a high bearing count, aluminum frame, swept handle and magZ braking system. It isn't the smoothest reel in the world but none will be in that price range. I've had it for 3 years and haven't had any problems.
They do make that reel in a LH retrieve, they also make it in 2 gear ratios. I don't see why you couldn't get a LH combo, don't know for sure though. |

I have no opinion on those reels, but yes, right hand retrieve means you hold it with your left hand and turn the handle with your right.

You could window shop Dick's or Academy for combo's in that price range.
BPS reels have made a vast improvement over the last couple of years. |

Thos Dawia Excelcer are a decent, however I never use magnetic brakes, but i tossed that reel a bit, and it was Okay. I would wait for either a BPS Extreme Combo to go on sale, or for a few bucks more a BPS Pro Qualifer which has a hybrid brake, it is about 25 more bucks than you want to spend, but greatky worth it
The Dawia Navy is a piece of junk, that you will soon wish you didnt buy. I just did recently, to maybe give away in our club, and that reel plain sucks, I can see why they are being sold out and discontinued, This is the only product I have bought from this company that was out and out trash |

GP, do you have anyplace that carries rod/reel combos near you? If so before you make your decision I highly recommend you go handle a few and see which one feels right to you. That way you won't be disappointed, because what works for one person may not work for you. Once you get a feel for it you know what direction to go.
And when you do decide and get it this website will show you how to set it up: http://pages.infinit.net/fishing/bait101.htm

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm going to go with the Daiwa Exceler combo that was linked, as it seems to be the best bang-for-the-buck deal, as even if the rod turns out to suck, the whole combo seems to be around the same as retail for the reel itself.
