Spring Lizards
While looking at the Yum soft plastic baits, I came across the Yum F2 Salleemander. 15+ years ago (maybe 20+) I remember reading about throwing lizards in the spring. They were the hot "spring lure" sorta like lipless crankbait seem to currently be the hot spring lure.
So I went out and bought a bunch of lizards but never had any success with them, but that was a long time ago and I didn't have much luck back then with a lot of lures that now I wouldn't be without. Maybe it's time to give a lizard a try again? |

I've never had any luck with lizards. You think they would work just like any other creature bait. Let us know how you do on them if you decide to throw them this spring.

I've used them weightless, weighted, shakey head, T-rigged, carolina rigged, trailer rigged you name it I've tried it, even dropshoting.
Never as much as a nibble! I don't get it, have no challenges with creature baits.

Go for it!! Caught my 12lb PB on a lizard, and many other fish. Great lures. This was of course in the summer (florida summer), but I see no reason why lizards would do well in the spring either. I'll give them a whirl as well once the grass starts growing up a little bit and a lipless crank bite turns off.

I've had good luck t rigging them with a pegged 1/8 - 3/16oz weight and pitching them around shore cover. I've also had good luck using them as a jig trailer with a 1/4 oz. maribue jig in 8-12 foot of water around submerged weedbeds. Black on black was the best color.

I've had great success with lizards. Mostly a 6" Zoom lizard, in a natural color, like green pumpkin, watermelon candy, etc...something in the "green" family. T-rigged with a 1/4 or 3/8 ounce weight and a 3/0 EWG hook. Throw it everywhere....

The only lizard luck I ever have is C-rigging them during pre-spawn on flats. Of course that's the only time I ever throw one

From responses here and else where, the farther south you are the better they seem to work.
Bassboss, have you caught any lizard fish since you've moved north?

Didn't really fish them much this year. I think they'd work well here though! Grass lakes just like in Florida!

Caught PB on a T-rigged lizard, but it wasn't spring(CO). Saw Kevin Short with Zona on Short's home lake(?) pounding them, but that was winter. Like KDS, I always figured they were spring baits to be dragged over spawning flats, after the males have moved up, but the females are quite there yet(?)

I have good luck with lizards. Use 6" mostly but will drop to 4" on occasion. Usually texas rigged. I find the bass hang on to them better than worms sometimes.

I believe I read yesterday that lizards are one of the baits that are being used in the classic right now.

My PB bass was caught on the exact same color/style lizard that's in MississippiBoy's picture. I've caught alot of fish on lizards.

I've fished almost no lizards.
I have some LFT Hyper Lizards, but haven't ever tried em. They look great, but.....
