I use a leader for all my setups of 3-6 ft except for my jigging setup in the nasty stuff.

i'm trying fireline's new braid this year.it's an 8 strand braid and is smoother than sufix.sufix blows powerpro away.

for bottom fishing, t-rigs, c-rigs, jigs, cranks etc. always use a flouro leader, with spinnbaits, shallow cranks, chatterbaits, top water, etc. use a mono leader!

No need for a leader when your throwing a spinner the bait is usually moving to fast for a leader to help just a waste of time to tie one for that . Jim

I got the Suffix 30 lb the other day was really impressed. But I have not used braid in over 10years either and this time I did spool it on a half full spool on mono. I was whipping a Spro frog regular and junior for quite a few hours and never hung a backlash, or like I call them, a professional overcast. I was also getting the same distance out of it as mono.

I've been looking at Power Pro and it comes in a variety of colors. What's the general preference here? I was thinking moss green, as I don't fish a lot of clear water. But I see a lot of the pros using the yellow. Is the color selection more for the angler to see or to help with the presentation?

I normally don't use a leader because I switch to fluoro in the spring and back to braid in the fall when we fish muddier lakes with more weeds.
I use green braid. Power pro is good, but Sufic Performance braid is my favorite. BB

Generally no, but if I was fishing super clear water, I would but one on, just a confidence thing I guess! ``

Welcome to the forum! Your call-some use leaders, some don't. I go with and without and see which works best for the conditions. One thing i would strongly suggest is to match the diameter of the leader and braid if you use a leader. For example, 50 lb braid has the same diameter of 12 lb mono. Cricket, I learned how to salvage braid after the worst backlash: Get a backlash pick or the smallest crochet needle you can find. It may take a while, but with braid you can pick out even the worst backlashes.

Ditto on the Sufix. That stuff is the sheeezzz. I use Sufix for all my line types. If any of you havn't tried their flouro yet, try it. I promise you won't go back to your previous brand.

Its hard for me to switch from PP just cause it hasnt really disappointed me. Kinda hard to change when you have no issues.
I think I will give the Suffix a try soon as part of a "scientific" experiment. Might as well. Joel, if you see this; how do you attach your leader? Maybe if there is one small qualm I have about braid it is that its visible.

Does Kevin's backlash trick not work well with braids? I haven't tried it with them yet....
Oh and I used Power pro braid all last season on my spinning reel and loved it. My hook up/land ratio got a lot better, and I never lost any bait! I fish a lot heavy vegetation and around lots of rocks, so a strong line is a must. I need to buy some more braid, so I think I will try the suffix upon all these expert recommendations. |
