The wierdest thing for me happens 2 to 6 times a year. When we get reports of floaters in the water. Mostly get them by Marine Raidio. Never go down stream with out a raidio either.

I have 2 stories, both pertaining to encounters with wildlife while fishing.
1. Me and 2 buddies were fishing Walter E. Long Lake (Decker Lake) here in Austin and heard what sounded like screaming coming from the reeds ahead of us. We hurried down there to see what was happening and see if someone needed help. By the time we got to where the sound was coming from there was only 2 bobcats right on the waters edge doing what only comes naturally. They kind of shot us a look, and by the time we realized what was going on we hightailed it out of there so they could finish what they started. 2. I was fishing alone on Lake Austin and went back into this cove that had a few REALLY nice homes in it. To the left of the cove was undeveolped and had a VERY steep rocky grade to it. I heard a commotion at the top of the hill and saw a big heard of deer trying to go diagonal down the grade, well one of the ones at the top stumbled and tumbled down the grade taking about 4 other deer with him they tumbled all the way down into the water and had to swim a bit to get out of the water. This all took place within about 15 yards from where I was fishing. Scared the crap out of me, I'm sure they were not in any better shape either...... |

I don't know that its really strange, but I almost got killed on the water myself yesterday. Right at dusk I was fishing right up next to a dam in the new boat, slaying the hybrids, and they decided to turn on the generators with about a 2 second warning and me about 15 feet away. Had the motor not started on time we woulda been swamped, but it happened to start right up and I raced the big wave all the way downstream. Real fun, real exciting and I needed something to tell me it was time to go.

The two wildest things I've seen happened in the same fishing outing about 25 yrs. ago. It was an all night trip and late in the nite we were fishing around a dock when two teenagers got out of a pontoon naked as a jay bird and walked to the house and yes we looked. Early the next morning on the other side of the lake we were going down the bank just plugging away when heard a scream and here comes a guy running down his dock, again naked as a jay bird and sails into the water and takes a swim. Neither one of us can remember how the fishing was that night.

Moose, My greatest fear is finding a floater, hell I won't even pick a shoe out of the water afraid there is a leg attached to it.

I've swam with Manatees before while fishing the river, that's alway neat....My buddies claim that they were messin around off of some creek, and they saw a little shack, and there was some crazy old hillbilly playin "Dueling Banjos".... I don't know the truthiness of that, but it's a funny story.

Well it's very serious. The Missouri is the second biggest river in the country. You can't make mistakes & live to tell about it. This river is not for beginner fishermen who baught a boat last week. The river has an UnderTow that will suckyou in & kill the best swimmers. Nothing less than 40hp motor. Anyless than that your not getting upstream. Even if you use a 40 hp motor you'll still struggle. We watch out for each other as fishermen. I suggest a marine raidio if your on any river with a decent current. You can get a portable one fairly cheap. If your an active river fishermen. My suggestion is that is more important than any fish finder with all the bells & whistles.

the ohio rivers the same way, you have to learn to manuver over paddleboat wakes and barges all day long, as well as dogs barrels, tree, trash etc

Moose, I was just trying to say how scared I am of finding somebody floating. I do think that it is very serious.

big rivers scare the crap out of me. me and a bud were running up the arkansas river one morning going duck hunting, yes it was very dark, the river was running pretty high and as we went by a channel marker buoy it just jumped clear out of the water. we were hauling as fast as a 50 yammer would go. a boat width more to the right and we would have smacked the thing. gotta respect the water under ya.
