you had them in a tank...i don't think it's exactly what you would call natural habitat. You stated before that the sunfish has attempted to eat the craw when it was red/black...so how can you say that it's not a good color. I think what some of us are saying is that if the sunfish could have physically eaten the craw earlier it would have, but after the craw molted it became easier to physically eat and digest.

nice.... i didnt catch that part the first time i read. so the molting theory, making the craw softer, is definately a good theory.

All I'm saying is what trigured the responce to know it could eat it. Please explain it with no human thought in the explanation, pure instinct only, first thing you are taught when studying to become a wildlife biologist.

ok, well my instinct would tell me to eat a sandwich made of soft bread rather than one made of bricks.

I noticed that Ike caught his fish yesterday on a black and red tube. Looked like it worked pretty good to me.

While color and scent might play a role, in my opinion the main reason bass go nuts for molting crawfish is due to behavior. If you have ever caught or watched a softshell the first thing you'll notice is that they are completely timid. They stay hidden and don't attack anything because they can't. Their shell and claws are like paper and they're completely helpless. Normally a craw will rear up and try to defend itself, not to mention pinch the heck out of you! I think when we catch a bass while slow crawling a jig, there's a pretty good chance that that bass thinks your jig is a molting craw that's trying not to be noticed.
So couple the defenseless factor with the fact that soft prey is easier to digest, and TADA! The perfect meal! Of course we all know that bass like to eat hard craws as well. That said, I don't think that they often suck up a 6 inch mudbug with snapping pinchers and a bad attitude. Like all predators, bass prefer to go after prey when it's vulnerable, which for a hard craw means when it's swimming. Ever notice how often bass hit a jig on the fall? Burning red crankbaits is a killer technique too. It's not a coincidence, 9 out of 10 bass agree that they prefer easy prey! Just .02 from a guy who think about fishing waaay too much |

Ike kicks a$$ , I used to hate the fella , I kinda like him now.. Anyway , is this the thread that started the attack on this website ? People are allowed to have their views and thoughts , even if your teaching/observation shows otherwise...

One thing you learn over the years in never say never. One bait might work in one lake but not it the next. Think about it how many colors work in every lake? How about North to South?
If you can prove one works for these let me know and I will buy it and try it out. Let me know. |

I don't know how many crayfish are listed, but I stopped when I got to 15 red colored ones. There are a ton of black ones here too.
