I have several different things to work on. My main ones are to get better at fishing offshore deep cranking and to learn how to read my electronics better. I got a Humminbird DI/SI unit last year and want to learn to use it better.

Learning how to read and fish the deeper edge of weed lines is something I want to work on this year. Also punching is another item I will zero in on.
As far as lures I am going to fish the mega bass vision 110 ito I bought this winter till I catch a bass on it. Every year I have plans for doing something different or improving on but I just can't stop throwing horny toads and red eye shads.

...well maybe not the RedEyeShad - that was one of my last year's things to try. I did OK with them, but didn't stick with it when the weeds came up. Now the Horny Toad, I'll throw that all day, any day even when I know I should be doing something different - it's been super productive for me and I'm addicted to the explosion when a bass inhales it.

I've got a wad of Chatterbaits that, after 3 yrs of waiting patiently in the box, are beginning to get that Play Me or Trade Me look about them

Found a spoon that might do the trick. Ordered it up and will modify it to work better.
Will post results. Good or Bad. Capt Mike

While I did get a few new frogs to try, going mostly with tried and proven Capt Kens Desinger Bass frogs-I am a frogman and Deps soft crawler Basirisky they are the first a numbers bait that will also entice larger fish to hit during spawn, the latter just a big fish bait to cull with.Only 2 of the few baits I use that cost $,reason why is they work.
Strange have a 20 dollar boat and baits that cost almost twice that much(Basirisky soft crawler 70 and 80 no longer in production) 50 in micro still is made, available in japan Yes import the lil buggers. They both do however require a learned hook set akin to them and them alone. Last edited by lilmule; 01-28-13 at 10:21 AM. |

I'm with Dogmatic... Gotta venture out deep, especially with some of the tournament times I have scheduled.
Jig... ehh... I'll hold that off lol. I just cant seem to do it. I want to perfect some shakey head and carolina riggin. I've fallen in love with some of the chatterbaits I have made. I am really interested in trying totally new colors, blade colors, all that... as well as presentation. There might be some days I just go out with a few rods and all my chatterbait stuff and sit there and make/modify what I have already done to see different techniques. Testing trailers, etc. My goal is to make an excel chart of color, water temp, weight, trailer, water color, time of day, etc. and categorize all my findings. IF ONLY I COULD WRITE A MASTERS THESIS ON DAMN CHATTERBAITS!!! I guess another goal is to once I graduate hopefully get on with DNR or Army Corp of Engineers, I dont really like the rocks in geology, but if I can find a job that puts me around the lake and try to make life better for animals around it, that would be awesome. Then maybe I can go deeper and look at sediment and fishing patterns. Something interesting that could be applied to all lakes. Sorry for rambling. But shakey head, carolina rig, and gettin deep are my goals. |

There are days when they wont hit a spinnerbait yet will a chatterbait havnt a clue, oddly my best use is on top of the mat, drag it off the edge and bam dont think they even see much of it.Tried it with plain jig and not as many hits on the drop so blade does figure in somehow. It is not however my go to but rather desperation attempt.

Man, it sounds like those two things go together perfectly. You should definitely add dragging a football jig in deep water to your list!

I'm going to give Crew's D-Bomb a try this year. Also Kaotik has their new Gorilla jigs which look nice. Might go back to the old Ring Worm and throw a spinnerbait a little more often. I've gotten away from them. Also have a couple new colors of Potomac Punishers with some custom trailers to test. The color I thought would be good didn't get a sniff in the tank in Richmond. |

I tried chatterbaits last year with some success. Though I didn't find a nitch when chatterbaits would catch fish and other lures wouldn't. They worked well instead of a spinner bait when I wanted something that rode higher in the water, but had just as many bites (or more) on a weightless fluke or swim-jig. The fluke I could slow down if needed and I could fish a swim-jig deeper if needed ...whereas the chatter-bait was sorta a one-trick pony: I only had success with it at a certain depth and speed. Maybe I need to give it more time, I only fished the chatterbait a couple different times for an hour or two each.

i thought it sounded goofy the first time i heard about it, because of the simple fact of the bait not being weedless, and also having treble hooks..but it started to make sense when i thought about it. most bass wouldnt have seen something like this before. i found out about this through a seminar held at bass pro..were a localy sponsed "pro" was speaking to our college team about some of the more uncommon techniques he uses. im still abit skeptical of the idea but i am going to try it soon as ice is off.

He said durring the pre spawn he has skipped them under docks like you would a jig or plastic, then he lets them fall and ripps them off the bottom with rappid upward motions of the rod reeling in the slack as he goes..Bamabassman i will make a new thread as soon as i try it, i have a go pro so i will post a vid also if you want.

I'm going for a 5 pound plus bass on the fly rod.
I also bought some California big bass baits that I plan to learn to throw. I'll need to use some of my saltwater gear to handle the weight. Last edited by Thingfish; 02-11-13 at 09:53 PM. |

Looks like lots of guys wanting to get better with jigs. Keep throwing them, guys. You WILL eventually get bit. I threw one literally for years before I finally got a bite-one magical day, and now I have a lot of confidence in them.
