Flourocarbon Line
I just started using flouracarbon line. Can anyone tell me why the following is occurring. I spooled my reel with 14 lb Triline Vanish. I started great, but after getting hung up and having to break the line, everytime I re-ty it breaks at the knot. Is this because the stress I caused when breaking it off. Or is it typical of this line. I have tried different knots.

there is a thread aobut the best brand. i can't remember the name of it though. i am so bad at this remembering threads thing, lol. kevin recomends it though. look under the search icon. type line types. and see what that does for ya. i'll look for it meanwhile.

bama is correct about the vanish. I know a couple people who have been turned off from fluoro because of vanish. But don't be. Vanish was not designed as a bass fishing line. It was designed for walleye fishing. Its not meant for the repeated casts and brutal boat rocking, eye-crossing hooksets of bass fishing.
I've used a few FC and any of them will be better than vanish. But my personal favorite so far is Seaguar InvisX. I haven't used the AbrasX yet, but I've heard it's good if you're fishing around alot of structure and things that eat up line. BB

yep seaguar abrazx is awesome, a lot of strength and abrasion resistance. invizx is my second favorite, not quite as abrasion resistant as abrazx but a little more limp with a little less memory.

XPS fluoro is my favorite right now. Invisx is my second choice. I may try the new abrazx but the XPS is good stuff!

Thats the problem...I have tried this line twice and everytime it breaks rather easy!!! I tried it again a second time just to see if i first got a bad roll, but no, it was just as bad. I recently purchased BPS XPS, and I love it. It is rather expensive, but sometimes you get what you pay for.

I always heard Gamma was the best. I bought a few spools of it and absolutely hate it! It's like throwing a rope. The BPS XPS is much better and less expensive. I hear good things about Berkley's 100% Flouro, but I've not tried it yet either.

They ought to rename Vanish and call it POOF! because that is what the fish will do. Thank goodness you asked here to question it because it could have easily gotten you to be a hater of fluorocarbon.
I use Sea Guar Invizx. There are different formulations of fc line out there to suit your needs. Some are more abrasion resistant than other, some or more limp or stiffer than others. Let us know what you want with regard to traits and our recommendations can help you make a better decision. Invizx is quite limp (at least to me in the 6# test that I use) and seems stretchy, which is what I LIKE about it for my drop shotting. I have not used stiffer lines that might be more suitable on casting reels.

Flurorocarbon Test Results
Below is a link to Tackletour's evaluation of fluorocarbon fishing lines. You will note that Basspro's XPS is rated #1 while Berkley's Vanish is rated next to last in the Summary chart at the end of the article.

Trilenes 100% flouro a totally different monster than Trilenes Vanish. Ditch the Vanish. The 100% flouro is much better.

Yep-Vanish is almost as bad as Iron Silk. I use Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon, but I hear good things about BPS Fluoro.

Also, isn't it important to wet the line before you begin pulling on and tightening the knot when using fluorocarbon line? If DDM isn't doing that, couldn't that also be playing a role in the line breaking at the knot? |
