Rod grip, nifty idea.
I was paging through the newest issue of Bass Master magazine and came upon a really neat idea for a rod grip that anyone can do. If your cork handle has seen better days you can simply cover it with a legth of electrical shrink tubing available at electrical supply stores. Fill in any cracks or damaged parts of your cork handle with a silicone sealer first and smooth out. Once that is dry, slip a length of shrink tubing over your cork handle cut to fit. Once the tubing is in place, heat it up with a hot air gun or hair dryer and it will shrink and perfectly cover your old cork handle and give you a nifty rubber covered handle. I have a rod handle wrapped with the rubber wrap sold at BPS and I must admit, I do like the grip I get with it. But it is a bit of a pain to put on. This shrink tubing idea should be easier and nicer to use I would think. Plus, the tubing comes in different colors allowing you to do all your rods if you want to color code them, such as black for jig rods, blue for crankbait rods, red for spinnerbait rods, and so on. This tip was submitted to Bass Master Magazine by a gentleman out of California named Bill Russell. Thanks for the tip Bill.

I left the clear plastic wrapping on one rod for about 2 years once, performed well. I imagine thats similar to what the shrink tubing feels like, maybe a bit more rubbery.

Haha...glad to see I'm not the only one who has done that. It almost becomes a game after a while...how long can I keep the original wrapping on this rod?!?!

I use hocky stick tape all the time.
Black or white... Black for the rods and white for the push pole.. That darn black push pole gets really hot in the sun.. the white keeps it nice a cool and provides a great gripping surface. Capt Mike

i too have read that tip and am interested to hear how it works. i have rod wrap on my flippin stick and really like it. it helps with comfort but it also adds some weight to the butt of an otherwise tip heavy rod.

My fishing buddy used to do that until we were fishing a night tourny and I heard "splash.........what the.. oohhhh shhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiii!" Him: Think we can find it? Me: Dude were in 60 ft of water but be my guest. Luckly we were throwing top waters and he had about 20 feet of line out before the rod left his hand. Between that, the black light and some Jac Custo he got it back.

It didn't. Rod on bottom, line stretched out attched to a spook floating suspended approx 20ft in the water (underwater). Place black light as close to water as possible in the clear Norfork Lake and see line. Buddy does his best impersonation of Jac Custo and retrives the spook and reels the rod & reel in by hand. Better picture for ya?
