Bleach will do it. Some might say it dries the cork a little much though.

But if you clean the handles, how will you get your hands to smell so nice when you get home?

Fish with 'em in the rain! Or just put them outside in the rain.

No matter what you try to clean it with just make sure that it doesn't leave the handle slick. You don't want to make it so slippery that it is tough to hang on to while fishing.

Toothpaste. Very fine abrasive, apply without water with a cloth, then rinse clean. Leaves your cork "MINTY FRESH"

If you want to get them to look brand new, so you can distinctly see the seems between the cork rings, you'll need to use a 600 or 800 grit sand paper, then use cork sealer, otherwise using hot water and a drop of mild dish detergent and scrub with a dish brush. That will do the trick, just don't soak the handles in the water just run it under quickly to get it wet. At least I've been happy with the results but on some of my older rods that had extensive use I had to wash them twice.

If you get really bored, Woody...you can help me install a 175 on the butt of my beast. (Wow...that sounds terrible...yet I still refuse to delete it...). I'm hoping Santa can fit one down my chimney this year.

Cleaning my rod handles would be like not wearing my special Haynes' socks with the hole for my supersized right index toe. It might change my luck. But good point Stew.

I just used a small light application of fine steel wool and the cork was like new again.
