Trailer hook help
Like I said, I cought my first bass on a spinnerbait today. I actually hooked him on the trailer hook I added. Boy am I glad I thought to do that.
However, that trailer hook is a PITA. It seems like every 4th or 5th cast it would either grab my line, or manage to go through one of the blade rings, etc. It was driving me nuts. Any suggestions? Maybe a smaller/bigger hook? Something to hold it more rigidly?

My first question would be what are you using to keep the trailer hook on the main hook, lately I have been taking the tip off a wrecked worm and using that to keep the trailer hook from swinging to high up on the spinnerbaits hook .

bryce, how is it "hooked" on your spinner? i use a piece of tubing over the eye and hook the spinner through the eye which is covered with the tubing. stays put. or you can use part of an ol worm or any soft plastic in the same way.

You need a better keeper to keep the hook from swinging up too far on the bend.
Strike King bleeding trailer hooks have good keepers. They are made of rigid clear plastic and you really have to work to fit them past the barb, but they keep the trailer eye down near the bend of the hook where it belongs. The eye has no business getting near the barb after you put the hook on. You want a keeper that provides a solid stop. I have in the past taken the smallest size of electrical tiedown and secured it tight around the hook then clipped of the rest. What the hell are we doing telling an engineer how to fix a problem that has exactly 2 moving parts?

Ahhh, thanks guys. I've been rigging it wrong. I was putting the trailer hook on, thten sliding the little tubing bit on behind it as a stopper. I had no idea you were supposed to put the tubing over the trailer hook eye and then pierce the tubing with the main hook.
Thanks for the explanation! Score one more confidence bait!

Hahah, Bama...shush you! I was just rigging it the way the guy at Dick's told me to when I asked him if they had any trailer hook packs. (I only asked because their aisle shelve are about 4 feet apart, and they have lighting that would make a Mexican Cave Fish bump into things.)

Here's a handy solution I've found to my trailer hook issues:
1. Buy yourself some waterproof silicone at a home supply store. I use this: 2. Get a plastic soda bottle lid and fill it full of some of the silicone. Then, dip the eye end of your trailer hooks in it, then stick the hook points into something, such as Styrofoam, to let them dry overnight. Trim excess with scissors the next morning. The result will be: 3. Now place the trailer hook on to your spinner bait: The trailer hook will fit nice and snug and I never have to fiddle with rubber tubing inserts. It can even be removed and placed back several times before it starts to become too loose. This one obviously has some miles on it. ~ Last edited by Stew; 07-26-09 at 04:15 AM. |

That's a pretty good idea, Stew. I may try that for next week and see how it works for me. I'm going to a lake that has some pretty big bass in it (new lake record was caught this year 11 lbs) along with a lot of weedy stumps and laydowns...can't wait to try the spinner.

I have always let the hook swing freely with the stopper above it .
