New Boat Project
Hi guys, I just picked up this 12' Blue Fin aluminum boat. I would like to fix it up with a front casting deck etc. First thing I want to do is paint it. Anyone have any experience painting an aluminum boat? I don't know the first thing about it, what paint to use? Primer coat?

No respones?
According to research it is a three step proccess. Sand and clean with tack cloth Prime with proper primer.. Paint with wahatever you want. Awl-Grip has a kit that takes care of the last two steps.. Now I suggest Awl-Grip since it will also seal the boat at the seams and rivets.. Here is the kicker inside too.. Capt Mike

Hey thanks for the replies guys. So I've done a ton of research on this since I posted and I think I have a game plan. There seems to be a lot of ways to go about painting an aluminum boat from really expensive and somewhat complicated to fairly cheap and easy. Since my boat is pretty old and I'm not going for a showroom finish I'm going to go the easy way.
1.) Clean the boat with a degreaser 2.) Sand with #400 sand paper 3.) Clean and dry boat 3.) 2 coats Rustoleum self etching primer 4.) 2 coats of Rustoleum high performance protective enamel Right now I discovered a new problem. Turns out my trailer has what's called agricultural hubs and spindles which are slow speed hubs designed to be used at 20 mph or less. keys that would be awesome if you could post some pics. |

Hey guys so a little bit of an update. I still haven't tackled painting the boat but I did sand down, wash, and prime the trailer. I used Rustoleum rusty metal primer. I think it turned out pretty good. Now I will go over it with a top coat, probably black, replace the hardware, and re-wire it with new lights. Unfortunately whoever made this trailer used farm implement spindles and hubs rated for 20 mph or less so I think I will have to change out the axle, hubs, and wheels too.

Looks like your off to a great start, and like Bama said, "keep posting pics". And if you don't already know about tinboats.net you'll want to check them out.....top notch site for aluminum boats like yours.
