Infinite Anti-Reverse?
What does this term mean? i know my spinning rod/reel setup has a anti-reverse switch on the reel, but the new baitcaster i am getting has "Infinite Anti-Reverse". does that mean it spinns freely 100% of the time?

Infinite anti-reverse means the reel won’t slip when you set the hook, while smooth drag washers will help prevent the line from breaking when you’re fighting a fish.
The difference is an "infinite" AR has ZERO backplay.. It is usually done via a one-way bearing.. a standard AR is done with a "dog" that drops into a gear slot when reeled in reverse.. This creates a degree of backplay until the dog drops and jams into the slot.. The advantage of the infinite AR is, with no backplay there is no line given back hence better sensitity, and more power tranferred on a hookset.. In spinning reels, it also reduces tangles as the rotor does not back up allowing twisted line or loops to back off. HTTP://www.google.com is your friend

Read edit above bass, I posted the edit after your post. I grabbed that off google, as I have no first hand experience, but the description I found there seems pretty clear.

Awesome thanks War! that answers my question, i thin i understand it now...while most older reels turn backwards before locking into place, IAR eliminates that backturn, and makes it so you hook them the first time

I still think it's a misnomer. It should be called "Instant" anti-reverse. "Infinite" makes no sense at all.

Pretty much, the anti-reverse keeps the spool from reverse while the reel is engaged.
I had a problem with this on a cheap gander mtn reel I bought. It would only happen after I reeled in line. But what would happen is I'd reel in the slack for a hookset and when I'd bring my rod back, the reel would freespool like I had pushed the thumb bar. And like I said, it never did this when I didn't reel right before, which sucked cause I had to reel is slack before I set the hook. I took the reel back (And that's a story for a different day, lol) BB

Actually, Infinite is more accurate in this case. In a standard reverse, there are a finite number of positions that the rachet pall mechanism can lock the spool. While in the Infinite AR, the mechanism can lock the spool at an infinite number of positions. Although, I agree, instant would be less confusing if only slightly less acurate.

I look at it from a time viewpoint. With my old spinning reels, for instance, Once I stop reeling, the bail can turn backwards, i.e, for an amount of time. With, "infinite" anti-reverse, the engagement of the anti-reverse is instantaneous.
I think my interpretation is slightly more accurate, so there nyahhh. haha

rofl engineer but you guys have all given me a nice description of the way it works and how it affects me while retrieving my line. Now, since the arrival of said rod combo, i have experienced what it is you are all talking about so it is easier for me to understand. Again, i thank you all for your time and patience while I am learning all of the new things to experience in my fishing outings
