What technique won't work for you
No matter how many times I've tried I just can't buy a hit burnning a spinnerbait. Never have any trouble with other retrieves but burnning them. I get it to swim just under the surface and nothing. I guess we have physically challenged bass up here in Pa.

Yeah... I can't get a bite burning them either. I'm probably just doing it wrong, I guess... fish have bit the most ridiculous presentations i have given them while just messing around.

The spinnerbait is probably my most successful lure in my bag. I've caught tons of bass and other species on spinnerbaits. But I've never caught any fish by burning a spinnerbait.

Wow! I know now that I am no longer alone! If my life depended on me catching a bass on a spinnerbait to save my life, I'd be pushing daisies! At least you're better off than me. I have never ever caught a bass on a spinnerbait, regardless of the retrieve. Ironically, I can catch them with inline spinners. Go figure.

Strong wind.
Bank the wind is blowing into. Throw parallel to the bank. That is my favorite place to burn a spinnerbait.

Spinnerbaits seem to be my least successful presentation out of them all so I tend to only use it sparingly. Swimbaits and senko worms have always produced for me when bassin.

Weeds over them if not topped or by islolated grass balls late in the season, try burning them with the rod held high and like a wakebait.
There are days when they will hit a spinnerbait burned near the top or at top and wont hit a buzzbait. |

By burning do you mean buzzing a spinnerbait?

There is a time and place to burn a spinnerbait. Burning seems to work best over shallow grass. The key for any spinnerbait presentation is wind!

When you burn/wake a spinnerbait, you have to briefly let the blade break the water's surface every 5 or 10 feet. That's the trigger and thats when you'll get hit. This happens all the time by accident anytime you try to fish a "wake bait" when there's moderate to heavy chop on the water, and the fish seem to be easily triggered by it. Thats one reason why I frequently fish wake baits when it's windy.
I've seen more followers when waking a spinner than with any other lure, as well. I have no luck with chatterbaits. They only seem to catch dinks for me. Last edited by BeaverIslander; 02-15-10 at 02:21 PM. |

Jigging. I know, I know, it's the greatest... every guys go to presentation... catches more big fish... I just haven't had any luck and consequently don't try it very often.

Jigs....I spent alot of time fishing jigs this past year...Crawling em,pitching em, popping em....rattles,no rattles, all kinds of trailers.....never caught a single fish
BI- I had tremendous luck with chatterbaits this fall...My presentation was to let the lure fall after every 5-10 revolutions on the reel...Then raise my forarm (like popping a worm) to give off a fast/violent vibration...and repeat. For some reason (i cant explain) raising the entire forarm instead of the wrist seems to give off a better action on the lure....its more fluent and natural I suppose..But almost always they would hit it on the fall.

I don't think I've ever had a bite on a spoon, and I've tried everything from Daredevils to Swedish Pimples. I don't even carry any in my tackle bag anymore

Maybe it said that you don't want the blade to break the surface of calm water, whereas you're saying with choppier water, let it surface every now and then. I don't remember enough details to say for sure. I wish I could find it..... Quote:
My biggest "no producer" is buzzbaits. I've never had a strike or bump or any followers (as far as I could tell) while throwing a buzzbait. Spooks, poppers, propbaits....I'ev caught fish on all of those, but the buzzbait secret eludes me.

I know this will be blasphemy to some, but lipless cranks are fishless cranks for me. No matter how, when, or where they just don't catch fish for me.

Just letting the blade break the surface for a split second, just enough to toss a tiny splash, is what seems to be the trigger. Bass love to follow a waked spinnerbait, and to a bass that little splash could possibly resemble a minnow kicking it into high gear to try to escape once it realizes it's being shadowed by a bass, and breaking the waters surface for a second. We've all seen it... Minnows flipping out of the water when presumably being chased from below. |

I can see where dropshotting could get boring, but what is it about spinnerbait fishing that you don't like?
Just curious, since my 2nd most enjoyable fishing last year was spinnerbaits

Most of my friends are spinnerbait feinds and highly sucessful. I have a bad shoulder, Mallen. I can not take pain meds because i am in recovery for over 17 years, most of the relapses I have seen in those 17 years started with the sentence" Then I filled the prescrition", I have been through bariatric surgry, heart surgery and 2 hernias, and it's no fun without the meds( once you get home, that is), it is difficult to say the least.I aint whinning here just answering your question, its a lot harder using drugs and being homeless than sitting through pain, fisrt hand knowledge here.
So for me to be throwing around a collection of parts from a hardware storee all day, is dangerous and could lead to surgery. Good question, as the spinnerbaits most definitely catch fish and lots of them ps This will be a concern with the few swimabits i have bought over this winter Last edited by muddy; 02-15-10 at 05:02 PM. |

Not wanting to sound cocky, but I really don't have a problem with any technique specifically. When used in the right time and place and presented correctly any technique can catch fish.
If I had to pick one however that I don't have the most confidence in using it would have to be the drop shot. Reason being is that I don't use it often because of the way I fish i guess.
