Visual Diagram: How-To Worm Rigs
There have been several posts about how to rig a Texas rig or Wacky rig, so:
Texas rig: Wacky rig: Those two rigs will handle just about all your soft plastic rigging. There are a few other rigs: Carolina rig: This shows a brass bullet sinker, but a lead egg sinker will work as well. I use a couple of tungsten weights because it puts out a loud click when they hit together. Dropshot: Start by tying a Palomar knot with a long tag end. When you have the knot tightened up, take the tag end and thread it back through the eye of the hook so the hook points up. Great way to catch suspended fish. Not a worm rig, but it comes up a lot-how to put a trailer on a jig:

Good post reb. Question : I've seen everyone put it on that way, but I was watching a demonstration with Jerry McKinnis, and he put it on the jig just like you would put a grub on a jighead.

So do I, but if you have never seen one put on a jig before you need a reference.

I heard the dropshot rig is one of the best ways. Not only because you can catch suspending fish but I read in a magazine here recently that the pounding of the sinker on the body of waters floor (mostly lakes, or calm waters) will attract fish.

I saw a show with KVD yesterday, and he said rig it all the way up onto the trailer holder of the jig for a more compact presentation. That's what I need. Smaller profile - more compact - swimmin' jigs - clear water.
It makes sense. |

OK, after seeing it discussed, one more rig: The Floating Worm:
The one on top is the way most rig a worm. However, the one on the bottom is rigged for a floating worn with a kink in it. The kink allows it to spin and look alive in the water. Just be sure to use a swivel a foot or so up the line to help with the line twist.

Kevin as taken the time to do some instructional videos that include rigging a texas worms, how to tie a Drop Shot and how to rig a drop shot worm. Well worth taking a look at.
I never use a EWG hook for Drop Shotting. Too much of the worm is being held stationary by the shank of the hook. Nose hook with a drop shot hook for more wiggle in a confined space.

Take a look at the dates on those posts...more than likely, the pics Reb linked to have been moved/deleted since then.

Im sorry to bump an old post, but I have a question about Carolina rigs.
I figured out this weekend how to set one up (not hard at all with the pic above). My question is, how does one fish a carolina rig. What I was doing (which was most likely wrong) was: 1 Cast the lure out from the bank 2. Let it sink for a moment. 3. Jerk the rod a bit. 4. Reel a bit 5. Let it sink again 6 Repeat 3 through 5 till you get back to shore. My question is,what makes the weight clack against the bead? Or, is there a different method you use to move or get the worm to move. |

nope foyt, you are doing it correctly i think. maybe jerk it a few times before ya reel it in a little. make it kinda hop along works too. varying the retrieve is the key i think. find the way that works for you and all is well.

Pull it slowly with the rod, dragging it along the bottom more than popping or jerking it. Take up the slack with the reel and let it sit for a few seconds. Repeat as needed.
It's a good technique to use to learn the topography and consistency of the bottom. The weight and bead will kinda naturally separate, then click together when you drag it again.

MB is right, drag it. Although you can fish it how you were, it's just I think more people drag than jerk.

Ok, that answers a lot of questions I had. One other one though, is what kind of worms you guys use. Is the worm just supposed to sit on the bottom? I was using a 5" senko, and it was just dropping right to the bottom of the lake... Is that what the presentation is supposed to look like?

I've heard of tubes, lizards, soft jerk baits, even a crank bait, about any bait may be used.
you can drag it slowly or hop it slowly, both will work. also the length of your leader makes a difference.

Bama there is several factors in choosing a leader length, weather and type of cover being the 2 most important, I think I've heard of people using has much a 4' to 5' leader, I like 2' +/- .
Bama just remember I'm ain't nothing but a Va. redneck who can't fish.

Good info on the rigs. Now that I've got my boat ready to go, there's a place in Elk Rapids that I'm gonna hit.
Never seen so many stumps sticking out of the water in my life. Gonna be fishing weedless as well as top water
