you can buy a tool called jaw spreaders that you stick in their mouth and it holds the mouth open.

Well if its a bass, I'd say stop acting like a girl, stick your hand in there and open that mouth.
Bowfin are another story. I think they can bite through steel, and when they decide to clamp down on a hook you either need channel-locks or you can just cut the line.

You need tools to work with bowfin. Get some good needle-nose with long handles, get some pliers and I have channellocks in the boat, and you should be able to get your lures back most of the time. Bowfin are kinda notorious for stealing and destroying lures, bending hooks and so forth, so theres no perfect solution.

Yeah, last weekend I had a huge (guess 28") bowfin hit a buzzbait. I was fishing with a guy in a brand new Stratos boat so we had it in the net next to the boat but it flipped inside and slimed the seats, floor, and my tackle bag. In the end he did flip back out of the boat with only my trailer hook still in his mouth but he destroyed the buzzbait and left me cleaning seats. Them are some UGLY fish!
