the monster
ok so there is a lake near my house and its a private lake reserved for the neighborhood residents. we dont live there =]. but anyways im a shore fisherman most of the time but one day i had a friend let me borrow a kayak. so i went over to a dock that i knew was good. there was an old man with his kids on it. they feed the brim every morning so i guess it brings in the bass. his kids were catching the brim and using them for bait. he told me he already caught a 7,10,and 11 pounder that same day. i did not believe him. but i saw him pull out a 12 pounder right as he was telling me. i thought to my self,"oh my god im fishing here!" but i have been fishing there for days with artificials and have only gotten dinks. i dont wanna use live bait for my trophy. any advice??

A peice of concrete reinforcement rod wired up to an extension cord /portable generator and some good quality rubber boots.
I am kidding. My real advice would be to slow your presentations down and be prepared to be bored to death, not catching as many fish as you normally would when fishing faster lure presentations. |

I would try a swim bait or a big spinner bait, try a brim imitator.

If they are feeding on the bluegill, maybe you could try you luck with one of the Storm bluegill swimbait they sale at Wal-Mart. I reckon there are other brands, that 1 just comes to mind. I don't know, just pitchin' you an idea. You know they are hanging around right there though, so half the battle is won.

I believe Tru Tungstin sells a bluegill swim bait that may just fit the bill for you. Or try a few live shiners.

Where are the brim? Are they hitting eating bugs off the surface or down at the bottom?
If on the top, then I would suspect that any disruptive TW lure should help. I would not suggst the storm blue gill bait. It has no action if swam slowly and ends up sideways if swam fast. In a similar situation, this is what I have tired that worked. I put a 1/2 oz upto 1 OZ jig on and used it as a weight to drop shot. I have a 3/8 oz blue gill jig that I will place 18 inches or so above the 1 oz. I fish it faster than a normal Drop shot rig, but it is still a lsow presentation. I will also hold my rod tip striaght out in front of me and work it from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock while retrieving. Use a lot of stop and go. If there are a lot of brim in there, then you need yours to be the wounded one. On swim baits, Matt's lures blue gill are the best you can find.

How many people thinks he is going to have the neccessary tackle to throw a swimbait ?
Keep it simple. Big fish are caught with small lures as well as they are with large swimbaits. What one needs to do is fish slow enough to allow the fat lazy bigger fish to bite............Or you can go all out and do the swimbait thing which is outta my price range.Live bait is the cheaper way out than the swimbait thang.
