My new favorite spawn bait
I usually don't throw on or near the beds, but have done it a few times this spring. I have found that a blue gill colored spinner bait has been great for me when I am limited to the number of rods (on shore).
It has given me the versatility to work the deeper water and focus on the pre and post spawn fish, but I can also treat it like a jig on the beds. In a lot of our pressured lakes, white baits have not been getting hit at all. I think it is because of how many times the bedding fish have been caught. I figured I would pass it on.

Good info, Cass. Makes sense, too...bluegill love bass eggs/fry, and the bass on the beds know this, so they act to defend the kids.

I've seen a bunch of bass on beds that attacked bream when they swam by, so it makes great sense. I keep a couple of bream swimbaits in the boat this time of year for that very thing.

Makes a lot! I'll have to try it! And I also have no blue gill spinnerbaits, got any decorations?
Thanks Cass!

I only tried it once last year and I was blind casting to a spawning area, but I did have one attack a Giron in a bluegill pattern. It is a very small swimbait but still a pretty big profile.
I really want to try using a swim jig in these situations and see how that works. How deep do they spawn out there Cass? |

They spawn rather shallow, but the water level is up since they first built the beds. Right now, most beds are in 5-6 foot of water.

My favorite are Jerry Rago baits. The hard to find Rago Gill & the Generic sewer rat. Both are deadly when there is a spawn on.

hey Cass, Dirty jigs tackle has a bluegill and sunfish pattern jig that is very realistic. Also KVD's swim jig in a bluegill skirt looks sharp.

Thanks Hookset. I have some bluegill jigs as well. I am not saying that the spinner is my favorate for the beds themselves, but I really like the versatility it gives this time of the year. I can try to get the pre and post spawn fish on the way in and then drop it on the beds. I usually go with a swimbait when trying for the deeper ones, but this allows me to focus it on the bed more as well.

Bluegill Duplicates
JB, Those are truly astonishing. I always study the prey in the lake or pond I'm fishing. I too notice the purplish mauve color that bluegill have on their sides behind the dorsal fin.Like you say,the hue is subtle but it's there nonetheless
