I just burn it as fast as I can. Using a high speed baitcaster also helps.

You can burn it like skeeter said, bounce it off the bottom, and jerk it with pauses... all work well.

my fave is slow-rolling a red excalibur rattle bait through grass in early spring. That is one of my fave ways to catch big females

try the yo yo technique...ya reel in for a few yards and then stop reeling for a few seconds, then start reeling again...some times they will hit it on the fall....
The best technique if the fish are n the grass is to run it over the tops of the weeds and hopefully provoke a stike! |

Probably a 3/4 oz.
There really isn't a way to fish them wrong-burn them, yo-yo them, stop and go, slow roll(moving it just fast enough to feel the vibration)-I usually just chunk and wind. Just be sure to either sharpen the stock hooks or change them. As good as traps are, the stock hooks are about as sharp as a Q-tip.

yea i replaced the front hook with a sz. 4 red gammy and sharpened the rear hook, those split rings are really tiny and hard to open. my split ring pliers couldn't get it open

i'm ghetto.. i have a mini tool kit.. and i use a mini flat screwdriver.. and use scissor-style tweezers. and it goes right in.. =P
but i havent replaced my trap's hooks yet.. because i misplaced my tool kit.. but.. make a long story short.. i took my dresser drawers out. and they dumped.. I found them ... haha |

here is my 2 cents..first i use 20 pd line usually trilene xl because it gives a little when bass takes it..why 20 pd, because i use it shallow not deep and i like to real it SLOW.just opposite of what most of us do..
next, stock hooks are fine if as said you sharpen them with file.. i use PERCH color most as that is what is in most lakes..most use chrome but many days i out fish others.. i like smokey joe also.. 1/2 inch is my best size.. i put red or silver sparkles on my rat-l traps..you can get clear fingernail polish, put it on side and sprinkle the sparkles on,let dry.. i get the sparkles in the ceramic area in wal-mart.. also i use reflective tape on lake,i reach down ,put on a yellow one, then try a red one , blue one.. you dont have to change traps or buy a whole bunch with different colors.. in the weeds ,i take off the front hook and put a big rear hook on.i cut the forward hook off the REAR HOOK so i end up with just 2 points on rear hook..i can lay that trap right on the weeds and not get snagged, pull it thru nasty stuff.. my favorite trap is the RAPALA but the lewis traps are good too.. thats about it.. |

Traps
1.Change the hooks. 2. Tick the grass(if you are not picking grass off yours you are not fishing it right)3. ALWAYS--ALWAYS keep a firm grip on your rod. Most strikes above grass are like getting hit by a bus. Note: Check out my new picture (at left) She is 9 1/4 lbs. My biggest yet.

I have about 16 different colors. I cut the leading hook on the front. I still pick up some weeds, but my hang ups have dropped dramatically. I also replace w/ red gammie on most of them. Don't use them as much as I should but when they are on they are it.

Everyone has given great advice. Once you start having success with the lipless cranks, you'll see that they are very versatile and catch tons of fish.
I like fishing laydowns alot and lose them alot, so invest in plenty of them. Nothing is worse than losing one after catching big bass on it. So, many posts recommend bringing a few of your best fish-catching lures and these are no exception. When the bite is on the lipless you need to have spares.

get yourself a plug knocked..you put it on your line and drop it, off comes your lure..i use one down to 20 ft..your traps should not go that deep.. also i use 17-20 pd trilene xl line..i pull up tree limbs if stuck.. plug knocked has saved me a ton of money,i cant remember breaking off lure or worm with that knocker.. i only carry 2 colors of trap, perch/smokey joe..i use hologram tape, i have 6 colors in it.sometimes i put green on 1 side and gold on other testing.. |

Plug knockers work great unless you're fishing from shore.

..i bought the 1/4 oz size this weekend..
my grandpa has a pond.. that wouldnt hold water.. its only like 30ft by 10 ft.. and its holding 3 foot of water now.. as soon as the bottom seals. we are going to get it filled eventually.. and it has a drainage ditch that runs off of it.. its about 3 foot deep.. so when its totaly full.. it'll have a stream from the spring it'll be fed off of and a stream with a dam. now.. we are going to try to put a few bass in it.. whats the best ammount for that size pond? .. now to the story i put all my new baits i bought in there.. while sitting on the drain water pipe and pulled them across the top of the water.. and rattle traps are very advertizing .. i see why fish like them.. |

if you dont feed your bass, i would not put only couple..
i would get some minnows and put in ,then bass..make cover for minnows so they can multiply and you dont hve to keep putting minnows in.. less bass is better, with minnows i would put about 10 in.. |

Oh and as stated above, I don't care how much you sharpen the orginial hooks, you should still throw them away!! Move up on size on both also!!
