Odd Hook... Help ID
I don't really know how odd it is or not, but I have never seen them before. I got a bunch from my dad, who didn't know anything about them either. I have been searching the net, but no luck. When you turn it sideways it appears to be a normal straight worm hook. Any one know what I have here, what they are used for?
Thanks!

How big is it? I have seen some hooks that look like that for fishing live bait when crappie fishing.

I remember these coming out when i was a kid i think. They were made by eagle claw and the funny shank had a purpose. When the fish bit down on the bait, it would turn the hook so it sat vertical in its mouth pointing the hook point right at the inside of the upper lip for a good hook set...

Those are Tru-Turn hooks. Walkeraviator is correct on the purpose of the odd bend in the shank.

I use those for worms sometimes but the ones I use are barbed near the eye of the hook to keep the worm from sliding down the hook Jim

Awe yes, the old Tru Turns. I think those were the first soft plastic style hooks I remember using when Texas Rigging was new to us up here. They lasted about one fish, and then had to be resharpened. But, we did catch quite a few on them!
My brother-in-laws dad still swears by them though. |

I have some of those in an old tackle bag some where.
I also wondered why they were bent like that.

Walker is correctamundo. Heck, I still have a couple hundred of those left from years ago, before I got too broke to fish. Even though I use the WEG hooks now, I'm tempted to bust them out for my T-rigs. They do work great.
However, like Zooker mentioned, the metal they're made of is not the best. You'll be resharpening them a lot. Boy, I wish I could get one made out of the stuff they make hooks out of today! P.S. They have a tendency to make a T-rigged worm "spin" when retrieving. However, I always used to lose so many of them, I would pre-rig a couple dozen of them on looms, and terminate with a swivel. So the solution to one problem also solved another. They would be great for C-rigging, which already uses a swivel.

Back in the 1980s or early '90's I ordered a bunch of those from Bass Pro. They seemed to work pretty well but I seem to remember them dulling rather easily.

If I were you I would not give them a shot, like others here, Iīm old enough to have fished with them and still got maybe a 100 hooks left, a couple of things I hated:
1.- They had this nerve breaking habit of hooking the fish through the eye socket from inside the mouth. 2.- They were dull out of the package ( you had to sharpen them ) and the sharpness didnīt last long, they became dull again pretty fast. 3.- They rust fast. So save your money and get better hooks instead. |

I haven't used them yet. They actually seem pretty darn sharp, but that eye socket thing bothers me. I have like 200 of them I think, but they are not my only hooks, I use eagle claw lazer sharp offsets. If they hurt the fish then they are trash. Thanks for the heads up!
