my first tournament
i fished my first tournament ever. It was at stockton lake i finished 3rd place with one fish. It was tough fishing first place only had two fish. The fish were jumping like crazy everywhere but were not keying on any specific bait. I was fishing with my dad and his friend and my dads friend caught the one fish on a brown and orange jig he made himself. i would be fine never fishing that lake again.

James congratulations on your tournament!
You got a good tournament lesson. The fish wil not act during the tournament like they did in practice. and What to do when nothing seems to activate the bite 'that day'. Now I patiently wait for yor first FLW or Elite tourny results.....about a year by my calculations.

Way to go James! Third place in your first tourney is a pretty darn good start. I once ran into that situation where the bass were breaking the surface all around me but would not hit a darn thing I through at them, until I put on a 3 inch popper and started working the surface with the popper like it was on steroids. Hard fast pops causing a LOT of commotion. The bass killed it all day, and that was in bright sunlight.

That's a pretty good start in a tournament fishing career. Don't feel too bad about Stockton being tough on you. It's a very difficult lake for me as well. I spend most of my time on Grand Lake in Oklahoma but my mother in law and father in law stay at Mutton Creek every weekend so we go up there quite a bit when I don't have a tournament somewhere else. I have spent a lot of time on Stockton over the last several years and I have found a lot of areas that hold fish and also found a lot of areas that suck LOL. It can be a really tough lake but this time of year the key is almost always deeper brush piles.

the part that made it difficult for me was fishing deep clear water. i am used to shallow muddy water. I had to buy quite a bit of stuff to prepare for the conditions.

I hear ya. Funny thing is, if you go a few hours south of Stockton and fish Table Rock you would consider Stockton fairly stained. I used to fish Table Rock quite a bit in addition to Stockton and Grand and so I was pretty comfortable with any water color, but I still prefer dirty water.

3rd's pretty darn good even if it is one fish!
I'm looking to join a club probably next year. I have a boat, but think I'd be best to enter as a non boater to start so I can get the feel of things and all.

Going as a non boater will let one know what others do in certain situations, one try to toss same thing just to get bit, then have something else to offer that will still get bit even when he wont be.Ive beaten two boaters this year out of the back, weighed in not a lot but fish every T.Then ran my own boat last two T,also catching fish.Currently ranked 202 in the nation, that wont last as others pile in last results will go up but not bad with 1109 pts as many times was not full field meaning less pts.Club T and ABA its a fairly cheap trail no boat needed do not have to be military,70 to enter.Draw format so even if you brought another would pard with someone else.May or may not draw a pard if boater but guaranteed to run your boat if you bring it or a rear seat guaranteed with 1/2 time yours as to spots-iffy if the guys on something dont ask.20 buck share fee or half the gas used whichever is more.Unless you request a long run to a spot you want to fish,30 would cover it generally.
Basically 100 bucks a T as if you run a boat about 30 gas used if not running long distance about same if a non boater,so fairly cheap trail with a year end big splash (championship with 2 boats to win)so to speak. Last edited by lilmule; 07-29-13 at 09:10 AM. |
