Default How do I know what thrust I need?

I have a 16ft tracker I just purchased used but without a trolling motor. Its not any of the nice trackers basically a glorified jon boat. I feel like 30lb thrust would do me wrong if I was heading into wind but without testing it I have no idea. Please help!!

30lb heading into wind would definitely be tough. I have an 18' bass boat with a 67 lb, and it seems just right. I can make a little headway into a fairly stout wind (~15-20 mph), and it can always be turned down slower.

If it doesn't cost more, buy the biggest you can afford and then turn it down to save your batteries.

I have a bow mount 55lb MinnKota on a fat ski 'n fish boat and feel it does a nice job...although I haven't tried making headway into a stiff wind.
So you could get away with less (the 40 would be fine most times out I'd think) but Nofear is right...get as much as you can as you can always dial it down.

just my opion here ok? but i think oyu should buy the biggest you can afford. i have a 55# thrust on my 20' cajun glass rig. not enough power. i am going to upgrade to at least a 82#thrust. that is as big as i can go without adding a third battery.

40 pounds would be enough in calm protected areas, fishing by yourself. I would definitely lean towards a little larger motor though.
