Bass jigs and weedguards...
Most bass anglers I talk to or read about who are fishing jigs are using skirted jigs with plastic weed guards. It appears to me they use these same weed-protected jigs in all jig situations regardless of whether or not the cover requires it. Why? Why don't more bass anglers fish jigs without weed guards in cover situations where the guards aren't truly needed? Frankly, I detest weed guards and seldom use them. What opinion on this subject do you have?

OE, I think (don't know) but most companies don't make skirted jigs w/out the weed guard. You may need to find a custom jig maker to make those types of jigs. Or, you could just use some side cutters and solve that problem.
As for me, I fish them with the guard all the time. I do trim them way down so they are even with the hook. |

The only place I fish a jig is near or in heavy cover. I would rather use unweighted soft plastics, and usually do. But If I need to penetrate heavy cover, weight ... either a jig or a Florida rig.

I have a few jigs that have no guard on them, but rarely use them as I usually use them in heavier cover. One jig I do like is a 1/4 maribu jig that has no weed guard.

Seems to me I lose jigs both with and without guards the same. There are some that now have two sets of guards that I'd like to try.
