pond craft?
I'm looking to get a small "boat" for tooling around a local reservoir. It'll have a 50# thrust trolling motor only. I'm not looking for a johnboat so much as one of the HD plastic puppies. I've done a few months of research on the net and at Sportsmans Warehouse but I have zero experience with them-- There's a pretty big selection of stuff out there...Anybody have some thoughts on these things?
Thanks- -Pig |

Wish boat
Pig you should probably get a boat that has hydraulic elevating seats, a flat standing platform with balance rails, just be prepared for when you get older or in case you want to take an older non experienced boater out.

Maybe I should trick it out. That way Heather Locklear, Halle Berry and Jessica Alba will be suitably impressed.

With a 50 lb thrust you can get a small fiberglass boat. Forget the small plastic jobs.

How big is the lake? Have you considered a ganoe?
Those plastic things are garbage. Slow as Christmas and still not stable.

Try Splash Marine online they are in Oklahoma City. I fish out of their 10ft. Bass Wagon. I fish a 77 acre man made lake. I use a 30+ lb. plus trolling motor it gets me around pretty good. One serious drawback to these boats HIGH WIND. Any thing much over 20mph is really hairy. But boy can you get shallow. Would not trade mine and the price ain't bad.

wtl.....for a long time i had a 2 man plastic boat and can't complain one bit. in fact i was just telling my dad today that i wish i wouldn't have sold it when i bought my ranger. slow? well yeah but i didn't ever intend to pull a skier behind it. and it wasn't unstable at all, i'm not a real big guy but i weigh a little more than i like ( 190lbs ) and i could stand on the side of it and she never offered to tip. i would suggest one that has built in livewells but that's just me. good luck pig!

Thanks for the feedback! The reservoir I'll be fishing is about 2,500 acres, 9.9 hp limit and very windy year round. They usually have v-hull and flat bottoms to rent but the drought has dropped this tank to 16' below full pond. The only watercraft allowed is what you can drag over the bank. I've considered a canoe for sure, but I tend to get excited and stand up a lot. That might again lead to the question, "can pigs swim"?
I appreciate all ya'll's help! -Pig |

LOL well can they. Sorry couldnt resist. Anyways a lake that size in a boat that you are talking about can be done with some level headed thinking. Dont take a chance if the wind id up. It aint worth it. Look around and make sure if you go the plastic boat way to get one that is called the bass hunter if memory serves me well. 11' long and wider than most of the ones I have seen. Its stable enoug that I could stand up.............not set the hook while standing.......you get the picture.

Laser (and all), I've been looking at a Pelican. It's got battery compartments, livewell (not that I'll be using it for tournaments), two seats (me and Pop) and what seems like some room. The problem is that I need something that can be hauled by a four banger car. I know this isn't the most interesting post ever, but I sure appreciate ya'll's help!

You know the nice thing about these smaller boats is the trailer ( if you decide to use one) is no bigger than a pwc trailer and can be moved about by a child. I have often thought about setting one up just for instances where I couldnt put my bigger boat. There are tones of water out there that is begging to be fished and these boats are perfect.

1FASTLASER,
Thats what I've got a Bass Hunter. It's very stable and you can get in places that bigger boats cannot.
