Different method for bedding bass
Here is a technique that is not used hardly by most fishermen who are fishing bedding bass. If anyone gets to try it, let me know how it worked.

Lets revisit
I had an idea to full the void.
I went back into the archives aways back (just like many newbies do) and thought we could revisit and see if ideas/techniques have changed. Now believe it or not this is the very first one I clicked on and found NO-ONE responded the first time. I was hoping to find one that had replies the first time BUT........ lets start here anyway. Lippless cranks are alot more popular now than then and this was before I was a member (like 60 pages back in the archives). So let's cover unique/favorite spawn fishing techniques or your favorite/unique lipless technique. Maybe this should be separate threads so you anglers decide if we want this idea broke into separate questions/ideas by starting a new thread addressing the ideas separatly. But the article covers both so I did too. Frankly I found this idea intriquing. The way I fish lipless cranks even sink and ripping seems to get the trebles with some grass but come soft water time I'm definitly going to try this technique. I think it will take some practice to get it right but how can I argue with proven documented success. So anglers lets talk FISH. PLEASE share your thoughts. I hope you folks will go back and revisit the archives and bring a topic up for discussion too.

One of the key points that I read in the report posted by Rock was the use of the smaller 1/4 ounce baits when fishing over weed beds.

It's an interesting piece. I'm going to give it a try, but I don't have any lipless cranks made by Cordell. I'll get a couple to try and compare with my other lipless cranks.

Last summer I tried throwing red eye shads in openings of lily pads. Caught a few bass. I'm gonna grab some 1/4oz. spots and give this a try.

Red eye shad works here about yearound, beddin bass I use a monster 8-12 in lizard pumkin with yeller belly, two down feathers behind head make it resemble a hell bender, late spawn I switch to white n black (Holstein).
So much for misdirection when I am using a trap its in 1 -1 1/2 ft of stained water in Lilly pads AND USE A FLOATER RATTLETRAP, |

I've never bed fished with a lipless crankbait, although I have heard of a lot of people talk about doing it with Lucky Craft LV baits because of how they sit upright when resting on the bottom. My biggest concern with bedfishing with a lipless crankbait isn't that they won't get bit, but it's usually a violent big dog on a short leash type of fight and this type of fight seems like it would result in a lot of lost fish on treble hooks.
Maybe I'm a cookie cutter bed fisherman but I am a flippin stick, heavy fluorocarbon, and small plastic (like a Smallie Beaver or Speed Craw) type of guy.

I don't get many chances to site fish bedded bass, but i have always wanted to try a slip weighted floating crank. You drill a line tie hole in the front edge of the bill and use a heavy slip sinker. You drag the sinker into the bed and then yo yo the crank up and down like a raiding bluegill.

Land big fish has Cordell spots for $2.29 and they carry a wider selection than my walmart and it only makes sense to buy a lot of other stuff with them to justify the shipping cost and then you might even qualify for free shipping, depending on how carried away you get.

If you find yourself in need of buying something new , let me give you some insight on what I've found. It seems as though I have been preaching about the Sebile flatt shads but I don't really mean to. In saying that ,if you have some money burning a hole in your pocket, look for a 77SU Flatt shad.It is their suspending model. The reason I prefer them over a suspending spot is because they are a little bigger in size and they are quieter compared to a spot.
Here is the 77SU and a 77SK. Notice the difference of the oil levels inside the trap. The 77SU is about a 1/4 oz. The 77SK is 3/4 oz. |

Lewis makes a floating trap as well.Their red zone model traps also suspend. Here is the 77SU with an old suspending cordell spot.
One thing, the suspending spots are very limited in color selection than they use to have. Not sure that they make a small suspending trap. You can always drill and adjust as needed and use a two part epoxy to seal the hole. Sometimes I use solder wire or tungsten rod rather than BB's so they run quieter. |

A similar presentation can be made using a drop shot set up with a heavier weight and longer leader than you may use vertically. Cast it beyond the bed and drag the weight to the edge where you can work your bait over and into the bed.

Kenneth, what is that screw in item that you're mounting the split shot on?
Don't think I've ever seen one
