this has got to be the damest question i have EVER heard on this board...
i know of a guy who tore his out board OFF his boat. but it took 90 percent of the transome with it.. moters DO NOT just fall off the transome. not even ancient outboards they all have a VERY secure clamping system.. look here this is a 1958 mercury 75mk notice how beefy clamp bracket looks? this clamp not only holds on to the transome but under power the torque is placed directly on transome it self.. the clamp bracket is strong enough to hook to your truck bumper and pick it off the ground. -no joke- my moter does have a 6" piece of fly away cable attached but in all reality all this does is protect me if the moter does knock something but GOOD. think a car hitting a overpass.. laser DOWN BOY!!! quite droolin on your key boards.. zooker

You know what, I posted something sarcastic but decided to edit it.
Why do you think your outboard is a danger to fall off? For one thing when its under power, its pushing itself into your boat, not off.

Rookie.. Im sry, but that was a pretty bad question but you know what? All you are trying to do is get on the water and get on the water safely at that and that is understandable. Some of us take for granted our boating sense just because we have been around it all our lives. I do not know a whole lot about boating but that is exactly the reason i am on this forum. There are a lot of guys on here that know boats better than the backs of their hands and you should feel free to ask them anything you are curious about. Yes sometimes you may get a little ridicule for a dumb question but dont shy away from asking a question that you feel is important.

Yea, I mean I asked something similar about how many bolts it would take to attach that big 60 I had. Its better to air on the side of caution. As long as the mount isn't cracked or broken somehow it should be ok.

sorry guys...BUT, ther is NEVER A DUMB QUESTION, ONLY A DUMB ANSWER. don't mean to get ya'll riled up. but that is a peeve of mine. and fishnrookie, if you motor is secured right.... don't worry about it coming off. if you aren't sure, check it yourself. grab a wrench and tighten it to see if it is ok. if you aren't satisfied, take it to a dealer and let them check it for you. good luck and have fun out there.

ROOKIE,
Don't pay any attention to the ADAM HENRY'S (A_ _ H_ _ _ _) giving you a bad time. That is a fair question. First of all, is it an aluminum boat or fiberglass? If it is an aluminum boat, don't worry about it, the aluminum is stromg enough, and with the backer plywood bolted onto it, it will give you good service. If it is a fiberglass boat, then you have cause for concern. I have had friends buying thier first (USED) boat and the wood in the transom is so rotted that I would be afraid the motor would fall off going down the hiway. A good way to check a fiberglass boat is to raise the motor and try to lift the lower unit and watch to see if the transom is moving in and out, or if it is a clamp on unit, check to see if the fiberglass is cracked around the clamp pads on the inside of the transom. If you notice any of the above, BE AFRAID, BE VERY, VERY AFRAID, and walk away. JackL

Rookie I think if you are this unsure about it you might want someone with a little experience along to give you some confidence ,if you are this unsure the motor falling off is the least of your conserns. I would like to see you have some more confidence before inbarking on a maden voyage. I wish you many YEARS of happy boating but safely.

WING,
I am familiar with Alan Henry, been there numerous times. I was refering to the group giving him a smart answer (Police/C.B. jargon--- Adam Henry's= aka A$$ H_ _ _ _s) JackL

Fishin rookie Welcome to the boards. Listen if there is a question about what condition your transom is in go and have someone with more knowledge on the subject. If you have a digital camera some careful pics taken of the corners, top and bottom and posted up here and I can help you out bud.
