Ultra-sonic cleaning solutions
What products do you use and how diluted for cleaning purposes in your ultra-sonic cleaner? Do you fill the entire tank with cleaning solution or do you use a smaller jar that sits in the H2O filled tank? Do you think bearings and such are more easily cleaned in the open tank or within a submerged smaller jar? Lots of questions but I'd like to know how you use your US cleaner...

For most reel parts, I use simple green diluted 75% water 25% simple green. I fill the tank and put the reel parts in there for a few minutes. Be carefull because if you leave painted or anodized parts to long they can discolor or worse.
I use camp stove fuel to clean bearings. The bearings go in a glass jar with enough stove fuel to cover them, then the tank is filled with water at the same level of the fluid in the jar. The first time the stove fuel will trun black fast. Dump it out and repeat until it stays gin clear |

X2, but I use acetone for most bearings. This works well for stainless and ceramic type bearings, you will want to use something else for bearings that use polymers in their construction.

I've been using lighter fluid as the solvent to soak bearings in... the down side is the limited volume available to purchase (small can size). Is fingernail remover a pure enough form of acetone to use for bearing cleaning purposes? If not, where do you commonly find your supply of acetone?

I buy quart size cans of acetone at the hardware store. A quart lasts a pretty long time for just cleaning bearings in a jar. I also use Simple Green and water in my cleaner for cleaning bigger parts.

Don't use fingernail polish remover. Even the ones that say 100% acetone are still different than paint grade acetone. Walmart sells gallon cans of acetone for 16 bucks. I used to use acetone but Quantum reels switched to a poly caged bearing and acetone ruined them. Shimano also uses some poly caged bearings in spinning reels. I found that colemen camp stove fuel or any generic stove fuel is very similar to lighter fluid and I now buy a generic stove fuel at acedemy sports for $7 bucks a gallon. I clean hundreds of bearings in it and it works just as well as anything and is safe on all bearings.
