trim one leg shorter than the other. One of my customers taught me that trick. Makes it walk better. Or at least it seems to in my head. But then again it's all about confience lol

I always trim an inch or so off the legs and bend the hooks out a little. You don't want to bend them too much or they will lose their weedlessness but a slight amount will help with hook ups. Lately I've also been tying a loop knot in my braid, I think it helps the bait walk easier.

I don't mod mine, I did it to one and didn't see much of a difference so I let the others be...to each their own and I always have a frog on and ready to go!
Edit: missed the popper part. My Spro poppers are my best producers frog wise and I don't mod them at all |

A previous thread on this site Bassmaster magazine reader tips I have used Spro poppin' frogs with and without the legs trimmed, and to me it doesn't seem to make much difference, but that is just my own personal experience. I typically don't trim them at all unless I am getting a whole bunch of short strikes. |

We use a lot of the Frogs out here in Ca. When the mat is at it's heaviest and thickest, we trim the legs so they don't collect on the legs and make the action heavy in the rear. One technique that almost all do out here is to take a few strands and trim them. Have about three different lengths on the legs. Other than that......keeping the strands in full length will offer a better presentation on open water. One other thing we do is to add a couple of Kalins glass beads into the body. Offeres some noise when working the mat. Other than that....there is not a whole lot you need to do to modify a frog. Open water fishing and mat fishing is where I have two different types. Good luck. SPRO offers a good bait with Gamakatsu hooks. Oh, we always use braided line with the frogs. Reason....no stretch. The last thing you want on a frog fish is stretch in the line. When they blow up, give em a second or two before you swing on them. Good luck.

Thanks for the input
Going to try my Spro this weekend, will post on Monday. One thing I thought of is tying a knot at about the "knee" of the legs. Thinking it might look more like a frog, plus cut down on short strikes. We'll see.....

I'll trim about an inch off the legs and bend the hooks slightly out to improve hookups. Other than that, I leave mine as is. They're great frogs all on there own. Good fishin!

Tied the knots, bent the hooks
I tried tying the legs together and, IMO, it looked great! The legs really looked and acted like frog legs. It was a tough surface bite and between the two of us, I was the only one that got bit on top. One solid hit, one short strike. Boated the one that hit hard. Knots didn't seem to interfere with the action, nor did they seem to collect weeds.
It was easy to tell it was not a surface bite because we SLEW the fish on Senkos, before, during and after the time we were using frogs. |

I trim off about an inch off the legs but leave one side slightly longer than the other like Matt does. I also add a glass rattle inside it.
