Boat Heater
I have a tournament in 2 weeks , on a powerplant lake. Anyway , chances are it will be cold. I bought ( only because it was way on sale ) a Mr. Buddy heater with the dual green gas tanks.
http://www.mrheater.com/product.aspx?catid=41&id=116 Long story short, would this work on my boat just to warm up the ol hands from time to time ? |

I've used one on my boat. Only problem is that you need to keep it low so there is no wind. You might also try those hand warmers that you can put in your gloves or tuck them into the sleeve band on the inside of your wrist. That keeps them out of your glove and warms up blood going to your hand a little.

IC 14-15-2-9 Gas or flammable liquids Sec. 9. (a) This section does not apply to motor fuel or fuel used in pocket cigarette, cigar, or pipe lighters. (b) A person may not carry in a boat that is: (1) kept, maintained, or operated upon public water; and (2) used to carry passengers for hire; gas, liquefied gas, or an inflammable liquid capable of being used for cooking, heating, or lighting. As added by P.L.1-1995, SEC.8. http://www.in.gov/nrc/2408.htm This site is your friend. The critical word here is the "and". I assume you are not carrying passengers for hire, therefore the person who said this doesn't know what they are talking about. I would still print a copy of this and carry it in my boat if I were you. The DNR guys can be jerks sometimes.

I'm no lawyer, but I'm not sure I agree. There is a semi-colon after the word "water" that indicates "seperation" within a sentence. In that instance, the and may just indicate there are two, but seperate restrictions. As the restrictions are identified by number, further indicates to me they may not be linked. Otherwise there would be one continuous sentence and the need to number them would not be necessary. Additionally, there is the instance of using boats for hire (2) on private water and restriction (1) specificially states public water. The second restriction may be written to protect the public when contracting services on private water, not controlled the the Fish & Boat Commission. Therefore I'm not certain that restrictions one AND two must be met to prevent the use of such an appliance onboard a boat, but that either alone is cause to prevent the usage.
Me, I would never carry an appliance using flamable fuel on a boat. |

Trust me on this one, Boogie. I prepare contract drawings for a living. The difference between "and" and "or" is intentional here.
I've actually read discussions on the difference between "will" and "shall". Black's Law Dictionary is a great read. Otherwise, nobody could carry a Coleman lantern on their boat for night fishing.

I would also check on the tournament rules and regs... the state or local law may allow it, but the tournament rules may not.

What other's choose to do, isn't really a concern to me - if they want to take risks who am I to say "don't do it"? But, I would not put a flamable fuel heater in my boat for any reason - there are easier less dangerous methods to keep warm that do not involve flamable fuel. And to use one in a boat with another, puts them at risk also - one they may not perceive as life threatening. I always look for "what could go wrong" and eliminate it if possible, rather than think "that can't happen to me". Eventually, if you take enough risks - it will. I have enough worry to about with the 52 gallons of fuel I'm sitting on. A fire on board with 50 gallons of gas in the fuel tank - no way I want to even think about that happening. Different boats, carry different situations and risks. Small boats with portable gas tank - less risk of a big fire, but going overboard to avoid a fire in cold water is not a good option either. Boogie, if you'd stop fishing by candlelight, and go with something more modern, you might have better luck!!!

Hey, candlelight worked for Abe Lincoln.
And I've heard a few comments about your luck, so I'd be careful throwing snow...... Yeah, snow - can't get to the stones............... |

You could always install a cigarette lighter and use electric gloves. Mind tripping over the cord though.

I have two in the Avalanche under edge of the seat one on both sides, and one in the Magna on the dash. We use them for blacklights and spot light for night fishing.

Does any one make a 12V electric heater?
Those hand warmers are awesome as well, they usually stay warm all day. Those have made my day bearable many times. They have big ones now too that stick to your shirt to keep your chest warm, as well as ones for your socks.
