What are your 2013 "Must Try" or "Must Improve" Techniques? - Page 3

I'm going for a 5 pound plus bass on the fly rod.

I also bought some California big bass baits that I plan to learn to throw. I'll need to use some of my saltwater gear to handle the weight.

Looks like lots of guys wanting to get better with jigs. Keep throwing them, guys. You WILL eventually get bit. I threw one literally for years before I finally got a bite-one magical day, and now I have a lot of confidence in them.

Yeah, several things. Deep cranking and slow dragging football jigs for one. Haven't done either one yet. The other is I am going to go out with only my plastics rod in the boat and fish only that all day. I used to be pretty darned good with a worm rod, but I have fished cranks and spinnerbaits so much over the last several years that I have forgotten how to slow down.

I need to try a Senko and a shakey head too. Again, need to slow down.

I'm getting used to my usual spots here in Indy and I realized I've fallen into a few bad habits which are the areas I want to focus this season.

1. Fish new spots on the same body of water, it's pretty slim being forced on the shore.
2. Get up and out earlier to try out topwater
3. Stay out later for some evening action ( Maybe even for some little walleye)
4. Crankbaits, buy more and try them until they work ( I feel like shore fishing isn't all that conducive with cranks)
5. Jerkbaits, The name scares me away but I know they are effective.
6. Finally, for now, get out for early spring action.

You may want to start with square bill cranks.
They are designed to 'deflect' off of rock, timber etc.
I fish from shore too.

The challenge with cranking from shore is the cranks dig deeper as you reel them in due to the water getting shallower almost guaranteed. Plus vegetation usually thickens as you get closer to shore.
A boater fishes 'out to boat' so unless perpendicular to the bank or fishing points they stay away from vegatation.

Now if you can get away from vegatation, a lot of crankers prefer digging bottom.

Just some ideas.

Hey, I appreciate that. Makes sense and its simple enough of an idea, I fish a point that really juts out so its the tip of a little inlet. Sandy and very little vegetation. If you have any recommended square lips I would love some input on them.

I'm not the crankbait expert around here.
A lot of these anglers really know cranks!

But the first thing is to understand when and why.
Here's a good starting point. This guy mentions numerous good brands but more important is he kind of explains the 'whys' which really is important to me.
Everyone has their favorites but start maybe less expensive than the ones mentioned.
I mean a Sebile squarebill is good but it's no place to start.

You have to be willing to loose a couple because they are designed to 'bang off stuff'.
Rocks, ledges, trees. You will get hung up once in awhile but if you don't your probably not fishing them at their best.
But they have a high fast float so you hit ,stop reeling it raises you continue.

Usually can't go wrong with Strike Kings. I fish those alot.
Have others but I'm not a go to cranker.
I do more river cranking than lake so I'll let the others tell you what's best.
But don't forget to ask them 'why'.

Thanks for the link joedog, I need some reading material with this American Honey. But yeah that Sebile is a little pricey for me! I'm on a college budget, I think strike king is a little closer to my budget. So is water column depth or color more important in your opinion?

Squarebills are shallow runners usually 1'-4'.
Once and awhile down to 6'.
That's why they are good 'shore cranks'.

Dave THEY converted me.

Took me buying a camera and everything.

THEY had to help me choose which one.
They than 'numerous' times had to try and teach me how to post the dang things.

Heck with new, Im going back to the old stuff. I had 5 rods, 2 for spinnerbaits, 2 for various plastics, 1 for crank baits (lipless). If I didnt catch them on one of the above, wasnt my time to fish. Now I tote around 12 rods all tied up with this, that and that one, for what reason. Last time I went fishing............ 60+ degrees, 20 mph wind, all fish caught on lipless crank and 6" soft plastic lizard w/ 1/4oz bullet weight. Im not gonna progress, Im gonna regress, back to simpler baits and simpler times. Still cant work a jig to save my dang life......maybe this year?

I just hope to use my Humminbird to find more fish. I struck out last year trying to find fish but I now know what I was doing wrong. I need to slow down the boat to enable accurate sonar readings or use the flasher on high-speed runs.
