1997 Astro restoration continued
This weekend I built the generation III rod organizer for the Astro, removed the old Hummingbird flasher (no longer worked) and installed a plate so I could mount my new water pressure gage, cleaned the console, toe panel, and trolling motor and applied Mother's Back to Black (awesome stuff!)
The old rod organizer (gen II). The Gen II rod tubes remain The new Rod organizer (Gen III), the holes will be lined with rubber tubing The new plate installed on console, also note the shiny black appearance of the 13 year old console A few "before pictures of the Trolling motor and toe panel And the post cleaning and Back to Black applied In about a week the motor will be back on her and she'll be ready for the lake.

John, the whole thing was constructed of Aluminum angle and Aluminum Flat strips and rivets. It was easy, time consuming, but easy. The rod tubes are 1" dia sched 40 pipe glued to a plywood plate.
The nice part is that you can customize it for your boat.

It is made by Mother's and available at your local Wally World for about $5.00.
There is another great product made by Mother's as well. it is a metal cleaner/polish. Look what it did for my Pro control handle. Here are pictures of the cap after I wet sanded it, compounded it, waxed and polished it yesterday:

I see you're from Magnolia, I got folks in Montgomery, Splendora, New Caney, Katy, Houston and the Pasadena area. My parents live between Palestine and Fairfield, I got a daughter in the DFW area and a son in Chandler (just south of Tyler). Do you know any Seiter folks?

Most of the local Atlanta guys would not touch anything but a block overhaul for a one year warranty for $5000.00. It's was crazy. I will post pictures on Thursday evening after the install.

Well, it's almost 12:15 here in Georgia and the guy is about an hour away. They say it won't take but a couple of hours for them to hook it up. Here is waht I have to do on the break-in so I don't jeopardize the warranty:
4-6 hours of Idling, then 10 hours not exceeding 3500 RPMS, varying between 3000, 3200, and 3500. Then I have to remove the fuel filter after I have most of the gas run out of the tank and fresh gas put in it. Put my new Micron 10 filter on to make sure that the ethanol induced moisture gets into the motor, change the plugs then run her on up to the top end. All of this is detectable on the computer analysis, so no getting ahead of the game on the break-in. I've got the tank mixed at 100:1 and the oil injection will produce the normal 50:1 according to his break-in manual. I just put 42 gal of 93 octane gas in there this morning for a total of $165.00 (OUCH!). With any kind of luck I will have my break-in done by going tomorrow and saturday. I'm headed to lake Guntersville on Sunday and coming home on Thursday. I hope I have free running by the time I get there.

"If it weren't for bad luck I'ld have no luck at all! Gloom, Despair, and agony on me!"
Well the motor is hung on the Astro and I got 4 1/2 hours of idling break-in on it. All the while I noticed a strange vibration like I wasn't hitting on all cylinders. So I tried to get her up on pad for a little break in around 3000 to 3500 Rs and it t[weren't happening. Changed the plugs today, re did the fuel lines going into and out of the fuel pump (noticed them leaking), found one burnt wire from my voltage regulator and thought that I had her fixed. Nope! not yet. Well the guy in Florida tells me they don't repair the electrical system. I asked him if he tested the engine before returning it to me to which he responded he notice a high voltage indication and swapped my voltage regulator out with one in the shop then loaded it on the truck and sent it to me. Hmmmmm? Did you check the stator like you said ya was going to do based on a symptom I told you about before the motor blew up? Nope! Well $4225.00 later and I am still down with out a boat. I am going to have a local mechanic put it on the analyzer and see what we can figure out. Tomorrow I am going to do an old fashion plug check with the engine running to determine which cylinders are not hitting. My hope is that it is one side or the other. That would be a pretty solid indication of a bad power pack (switch box). I can change those out myself for about 425.00 (pair). If it's the stator which is also a real possibility, then it will have to go to a mechanic because I don't have a flywheel puller nor the experience to tackle it unsupervised. Alas, I have notified John and Lisa that I will have to cancel next week's visit with them. I still plan to spend some time with that fine couple in the very near future though! Thanks!

That sucks bob . it's a shame that you can be charged for the work the guy felt like doing and still not have the boat running at that price . I wish you luck in getting it back on the water soon .
