Saint Clair
Even though I don't have my boat up here in Michigan I managed to get a couple rides out on the big lake in the past week, one with site member fiker. The lake was fishing really great, with clear water and fish up everywhere from 6-11'. The first day I went out they were hitting everything (except a spinnerbait, which NEVER works for me). I caught them on tubes, drop shot worms, crankbaits, jerkbaits, and even a few on topwater. The first on topwater shot up from about 10' down and hit the Sammie so hard that they both went about 2' out of the water!
The second day I went out they were biting even better but we mainly used tubes. There were several 5#ers caught and lots of double headers. There were 3 of us but we never managed a triple. My biggest of the day (between 5-6#) jumped, then hung in the weeds, then right next to the boat with the net in the water he broke my line. Probably the best 2 consecutive days I've ever had fishing. Between both trips fish total was right around 150 with average size around 3#. And Dylan landed this 40" muskie as icing on the cake. It was successfully released and swam away: |

I made it back out there tonight as a backseater with a couple friends who were prefishing for a big tournament this weekend. We ran around a lot but the fish weren't quite biting like they were last week. Biggest one today was about 3 pounds and I boated about a dozen. We did leave fish to look other places, but it wasn't as good as last week when they were on beds in 8'-10'. It was still a great night out there and I never get tired of how those smallies pull on your line.
Anybody who is thinking about heading out there should do it. It is an incredible place. There is a lot of water so you have to know where to go since the fish move throughout the year. If anybody needs a guide let me know, one of my friends is very good and is out there all the time. |
