New technique for me
So, I had some 3/8 ounce football jigs I made that were just sitting in the boat looking forlorn and unused. In a moment of clouded clarity i tore the skirt off, yanked out the weed guard and stuck a 5 inch grub on it. I dropped it next to a piling and a 4 pounder inhaled it..... okay, myabe it was just luck and hit her in the head with it..... but.... later on I just tossed it into the water where it was a rocky and pebbly bottom and just slowly retrieved it along the bottom. I could feel every rock, pebble, weed, and mud area as I dragged it along... but dang, I had three or four bass inhale it... for now it is my go to technique.... give it a try and let me know what you think...

Sounds sort of like a "chubby shaky head" technique.

I forget who it was, but one of the Bassmaster Elites was using something similar in a tournament recently. He was using a 1-oz football head jig stuck through a swimbait, but same idea. He cast that thing a mile and a half, it looked like.
I may have to check this out...I've got a few jigs with ratty skirts that I might re-purpose.....

Grubbing is definitely something I need to work on for river smallies. lol
I'm curious as to why you pulled the weed guard off? Seems like you're bite to land ration would be just as good if you thinned the guard a little. I might have to find a place to try that today though, seems like a useful technique.

It was ratty looking so I figured it was of little use and there were no weeds where I was fishing at the time.

Me too but I doubt that it would have worked as well as a stick of dynamite would have....

dynamite would have worked i think. either that or the ol telephone method.
one the original note. i like this idea doc. i have bought some "jig" looking thing-a-gobobs and hooked a 5"-6" curly tailed worm on before and got some serious hits. all dinks of course. maybe in this heat it'll work better offn some ledges? hhhhmmmmmm...........

Don't worry Keith, I threw some of my FB jigs with twin tail grub trailers. Although mine did have skirts.
Spider Grubs like these are fairly popular fished on a football jig head. BB

Try a 10" ribbon tail worm on that jig. Zoom Ol Monster or Yum Ribbon tail, something like that.

You betcha! I know elites and guides from Texas to Georgia that have been using it for a while! There are a variety of jigheads available now with football heads and hook sizes up to 6/0 for just this method of fishing. It works.
