Just curious....
Another thread got me thinking of this ...
I am right handed with my spinning reels I perfer the handle on the left and the rod in my right hand. But with a baitcasting setup I perfer the opposite handle in my right and rod in my left hand. Is this typical? How does everyone else do it? It just struck me as odd for whatever reason!

Yeah, I'd say that's pretty typical. For what ever reason that's the way alot of people started out. I don't know anyone the that's RH and uses a RH spinning reel though.

I do think a lot of people fish that way. Maybe because spinning reels aren't labelled as RH/LH since they can be changed and casting reels are. This may have lead to people fishing spinning reels how they came (95% of spinning reels I've seen come out of the box LH), and choosing to fish casting reels of the same handedness as they are.
Maybe it has to do with how we were taught. I'm sure most of us were taught by our dads, grandpas, uncles, etc. And no doubt, most of them probably fished RH because there never used to be LH casting reels. My dad is left handed, and fished RH baitcasters. But he still fishes spinning reels LH. On the other hand, I'm right handed and fish LH spinning and casting reels. It's kind of a weird case though, I learned to fish a spinning reel LH from my dad. And when I switched to casting reels, I just stuck with LH, not knowing about any of the benefits of using the opposite handed reel. However, once my dad got back into casting reels (used to use them back when he salmon fished), it turns out he fished them RH. I have no doubt that if he had taught me to fish a casting reel, I probably would be using RH ones. BB

It's kinda funny but I reel left handed with my spinning reels all the time but for some reason I can't seem to do the same with my casting reels. Maybe it's because the casting reel have a smaller narrower handle, I don't know. All I know is I retrieve my casting reels right handed. I've done it that way so long that I can start my retireve very quickly after the lure touches down.

I always reel left handed. I don't think they're anything special about that though, as I've bought half of my trolling reels in right hand for whoever is fishing with me that day. I know that a majority of bass fishermen still reel with their right. That seems to be changing though, and it might not be too long before only people who cast with their left reel with their right.

That's the way I do it - Spinning, reel with left hand and casting, reel with the right hand. I've tried each the other way around and can't manage it, it feels so aukward.

You can reel anyway you like, as long as it doesn't have a go-fast paint job.
