Steering help
Hey Folks , Need a little help. I own a 1989 Champion w/ a 175 merc. I have noticed that my steering seems to be getting harder to operate. The steering wheel doesn't turn as freely as it once did. This is happening as low and high speeds. It feels like the cables need to be lubed but I don't see how I could get any type of grease or oil from one end to the other.Any help would be apreciated. Happy Holidays.

that should have two cables. take them loose from the motor. most likely one of them has internally frayed. the other may still be ok, or may also be bad.

Think the mechanics have a tool designed for that, but myself use a can of spray oil or even white lithium grease with a red straw attachment, sprayed into the housing works from small gas cables to larger steering cables, access to steering cable is by taking the nut off, spray even the rod then work back and forth while off the motor. The motor itself also has grease fittings.Spraying just the bar sometimes fixes it sometimes needs more than one can apply from there.
If cable is frayed replace. I eliminated my steering hoses with hydraulic, but still need to grease or oil the gas cable, and motor itself. |

cable lube
Thanks guys, all good advice. I don't think my cables are bad, just in need of a little motion lotion. Going to try the lube injector.Looks like it should do the job.
