I sharpen every hook, even new Gama's out of the box. I use the diamond hone that is shown above. The thumb nail test is a good one,Rarely will you find a crank that will pass it new. When Gamakatzu hooks first came out in the 80's they were the sharpest things I had ever seen. Not anymore. One word of advise. Dont over sharpen. You can heat the metal up with a sharpener and hurt the temper or soften it. Fish2win
