Thrift Shop Find
My wife let me know today that I really wanted to go with her down a place we call "consignment row". This is a block of nothing but thrift shops. Most are church run and full of junk. I made my way to the sporting section in each place and was fiddling with stuff when I saw a very dirty baitcaster on a 7 foot rod. I picked it up and could wipe enough off the grime off to read curado on the reel and loomis on the rod. (The G was scratched off) The rod tip was broken, but I don't think it lost more than 2-3 inches. I asked how much and the lady at the counter shrugged and said $25.
I was able to clean them up when I got home and the reel is in far better shape than I thought. It turns out to be a CU 200B and the rod is a FGR 86 (something) It was too worn to read. My wife wanted me to try and talk the lady down, but I was confident before I even cleaned it up that I was getting a good deal. I left my card and asked the lady to call me if she got anymore fishing stuff in. She laughed and said that they get them all the time. Usually from angry wives going through a divorce. At which point I took my wife's hand in mine, kissed her cheek and asked her where she wanted to go next.

Good deal? that's a great deal!. Figuring a Loomis rod can run anywhere from 175-400 dollars, even the older ones. A missing tip is one of the easiest things to fix too. and then you've got the reel.
I'll have to start loking around here. BB

Loomis comes with a lifetime warrenty. Just depends on "how" the tip got busted.... Get the reel cleaned up and you've got a pretty nice deal.

Does Loomis require a receipt to replace a broken rod tip? If not, you could get a brand new rod. Personally, I would just get the old one fixed because my wife would lay the guilt trip on me about being dishonest since I didn't originally purchase the rod. Either way, it was a great find.

No they don't. I sent one in to repair a guide and they made the repair and sent it back. Costs a few $$ to mail it in.

congrats casidyta, great dela you got there. i'm gonna have to start hitting dem thrift stores pretty soon. flea markets are good too. yards sales are great areas as well. for the second year in a row we haven't been able to go shopping the "worlds longest yard sale". if you live close to it, go. lots of great finds but you have to be careful, cause there are also a few ripoff places too.

I try to avoid flea markets because they have the highest ratio of people trying to rip you off. At least IMO. The thrift shops are good because the people don't know what they have and it was all donated to them anyways.

In regards to fixing the tip. You'd spend more money on shipping to send the dang thing to Loomis than you would to do it yourself, and as I stated before, it is a very easy fix. Buy a new tip (make sure it is the right size), and some waterproof 30 minute epoxy. i let mine cure for 24 hours before using them. If you can't find decent tips around you, check this website. They have them from $0.40-$11.00 for one. I'd go with a higher end Fuji guide just to make sure it's safe for braid.

Thanks BB. I have put several tips on in the past, so I know it is fairly simple. I will pay the extra money this time and get a better one.

Broken tip
If the blank is broken and you're missing a couple inches from the tip, the action of the rod will be affected adversely. I would reccomend gettign it replaced. Loomis has a "No Questions Asked" replacement for a pretty small fee depending on which rod you have. I have a MBR843 IMX that got the tip closed in a deck lid, two days before a tournament. Loomis had a new one waiting at my hotel when I got there, with pre-paid return postage for my broken one. Replacement cost was $50 on that rod. Look on Loomis' website and call them. It's well worth it.

revrat, it is true that Loomis will replace any rod for $50 no quesstions asked.
cassidyta, In your case, I would not do it. for a couple reason. 1. The whole combo costs you $25. (and I've read that the older G-loomis rods are better before loomis was bought)* 2. brokin tips don't change the action that much, IMO. 3. If you bought a new G-loomis for $250 at BPS or whatever, that was specifically 6'6" MH and specifically for throwing soft plastics, then the action thing may affect it for the purpose it was purchased for. But again, in your case, I would just replace the tip. BB

Well, I ended up replacing the tip. For a guy who had never used a rod with a value above $100, it appeared to work fine for me.
The whole set is getting shipped out to my Dad. I figure that this man bought me my first rod as well as several after that. I won't lie and say that it was an easy decision, but he is now retired and fishing a lot now.

Ivan,
It is actually closer to just metal than any other color. If I had to guess after the clean up, it was green.
