Horn going off a when trying to plane off the first time
Hey guys I have a 200 HP 2005 mercury optimax it runs great other than when I plane out for the first time it will beep for a solid 4 seconds and if you try to drive through it it will go into Guardian mode til you let out on it a little bit, but normally that's it just one time and its done but if you fish a hour or so at one spot and plane out again it will go off again. Any help would be great I'm fixing to take it to the shop unless its just something simple

That's an engine overheat code.
Most likely one of two things: 1. Your engine is not set up right, and your water intake isn't deep enough. When you get up on plane, the engine is deprived for water for cooling. 2. You might have a bad thermostat, which lets through enough water for piddling around, but not enough for higher power output.

Have you ever replaced the water pump impeller ? Needs to done every two-four years depending on usage. Less used more often replaced.

Bad thermostat, weak thermostat, impeller, lwp due to motor height ,worst thing you can do is to continue to drive when it goes off regardless if it lets you when you ease off.
One day you will get many miles away and it wont plane at all, then spend 5hrs in guardian mode getting back. Been there cost me a days fishing in a 3 day T and was anothers boat day prior it had done just that, impeller went, and he didnt remove his boat from boaters list.Went about 20-25 miles, spent rest of day getting back. Like the capt said about every two years when it goes in for anything else have the impeller changed out. |

The motor just had a new powerhead put on so I suppose it has a new impeller but you never know until you ask but it has good water pressure 28 wot due to motor height being low but I guess I will take it to the shop

28 is good, idle will be much less but normal,on plane is what really counts, that and a steady pea stream. Most likly weak thermostat if a steady pea stream.Bet your mechanic can tell by the sound the horn makes one long or whatever, its a code of sorts.
Newer ones they hook a laptop to,and can read everything. |

I had a 115 Evinrude Ficht that did that. Had it repaired and got to Canada and it started in again. Headed home and traded it in. Sometimes once a problem - always a problem. Spent as much time on the road as fishing that trip. lol

One long beep or several shorts any good mechanic will know what it means and attack accordingly, should be simple fix while annoying, since powerhead rebuilt. Can mean anything from low oil(are you running double oil for breakin) to high heat or low water.
There are two tan temp sensors, one on each head, the vacuum switch, the VRO harness and the low oil sensor. Unplug them all if the alarm still sounds then you have a defective horn.Oddly if the oil cap isnt on properly it will sound off on some motors.Or even a simple air bubble in oil line, hint squeeze bulb. Again any decent mechanic should be able to fix fairly easily. Last edited by lilmule; 11-09-13 at 09:33 AM. |
